Liverpool duo made ‘expendable’ by Klopp targeted in shock double raid by Serie A giant with void to fill

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain being replaced by Naby Keita

Two Liverpool midfielders are being looked at by the same Serie A side after Jurgen Klopp decided they are surplus to requirements at Anfield, according to reports.

Liverpool’s midfield has been under scrutiny in recent months. Changes are expected in the department in the new year. The focus will be on whether they can win the race for Borussia Dortmund sensation Jude Bellingham.

To make room for him, though, they will have to get rid of a couple of their existing options. In that regard, some of their players will be out of contract at the end of the season anyway.

For example, James Milner only has terms that last until 2023, by which time he will have turned 37. In addition, Arthur Melo has failed to get going during his loan spell from Juventus due to injuries, and will likely not have a longer future at the club.

What the future holds for them beyond June remains to be seen. Two players in a similar boat who may be getting more of an idea, though, are Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Both have shown flashes of their quality during their Liverpool careers, but not consistently. Injuries have hampered both of them to some extent, which has decreased their chances of being kept on by their current employers.

Keita and Oxlade-Chamberlain will be on the lookout for a new club in 2023. Coincidentally, they could end up at the same destination, if reports in Italy are accurate.

According to, the Liverpool pair have emerged onto the radar of Serie A champions AC Milan.

The Rossoneri need to strengthen their own midfield after losing Franck Kessie on a free transfer to Barcelona in the summer. Therefore, they have supposedly identified Keita and Oxlade-Chamberlain as two players of pedigree who could help them going forwards.

New challenge may await Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

As the report reminds, the duo are on Liverpool’s list of “expendables” as determined by manager Klopp.

For now, it seems more likely that Milan will wait until the summer to take them on free transfers, rather than paying for them in January. But by the time the winter window opens, they could secure their services for next season in advance on a pre-contract agreement.

Neither Keita nor Oxlade-Chamberlain has played in Serie A before, so it would be a new challenge for them.

It would be interesting to see how they would adapt to the different environment. Expectations at Milan are high again following their Scudetto win from last season and qualification for the knockout stage of this season’s Champions League.

Keita is still only 27 years old, whereas Oxlade-Chamberlain is 29. Hence, both players may have a point to prove that their careers are not going to fizzle out.

Time will tell if Milan’s interest is concrete and how each of them would feel about San Siro as a destination. If it materialises, it could be a good opportunity to get back on track for both of them.
