Liverpool thrown into Haaland contention with Klopp backed to change style for signing

Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland claps

Erling Haaland would be a “frightening” replacement for Mohamed Salah at Liverpool, according to one pundit who can foresee Jurgen Klopp changing their style to accommodate him.

Haaland will be in demand during the summer transfer window due to a release clause in his Borussia Dortmund contract. His goal-getting form over the past couple of years has suggested he is worth more than what he will actually be available for.

Therefore, there is a smart investment up for grabs, attracting many of Europe’s elite clubs.

Liverpool have not been one of the main names to be linked. Instead, Premier League title rivals Manchester City seem to have an advantage. The likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona are also mentioned in connection with the Norwegian more frequently.

But CaughtOffside pundit Luke Chadwick believes Haaland would be a good fit for any club, including Liverpool.

Even so, he believes it would require “quite a tweak” from Jurgen Klopp tactically.

Chadwick told the online outlet: “I think you can picture Haaland at any of the top clubs in the world with what he offers.

“It would mean a change of style at Liverpool, in terms of giving them a real number 9, which they don’t usually have. [Roberto] Firmino plays there but does a lot of his best work outside of the box.

Haaland deal will cost Man City £300m with wages and fees

Erling Haaland will cost Manchester City €300m if they want to sign him from Borussia Dortmund this summer with Mino Raiola taking a £37m cut.

“Still, it’s quite a frightening prospect picturing Haaland at Liverpool or Man City with what he can bring. It would mean quite a tweak to how Liverpool play.

Klopp tipped to tweak style with Haaland

“Jurgen Klopp’s a world-class manager and he can make that work. With doubts over Mohamed Salah’s future, Haaland can replace those goals, and it’s a great option to have if Liverpool can get him.”

Salah is out of contract in 2023 and is yet to agree to the terms of a renewal. The winger would leave a major void in Klopp’s lineup.

But with Sadio Mane and Luis Diaz also strong options on the wing, and Diogo Jota capable of performing anywhere across the frontline, perhaps he could be replaced by a centre-forward instead to add further competition for Firmino.

Haaland is one of the elite options of his generation, so would be a statement signing. That said, there is nothing to suggest Liverpool are planning a move for him.

What’s more, he could command wages above £600,000 per week. Liverpool would not just have to adapt their tactics to bring him in, but also their wage structure. And when they are haggling with Salah over his renewal terms, that seems admittedly unlikely.
