Liverpool are looking to sign two mega stars, with a club-record bid for Federico Valverde lined up in January, Chelsea are to offer Romelu Lukaku as bait for Graham Potter’s dream striker signing, while Monday’s Euro Paper Talk claims Leeds are back in for a Club Brugge star.
Liverpool are ready to launch a fresh assault to bring Federico Valverde to Anfield in January, according to a report.
The Reds reportedly launched an enquiry for Valverde in the summer only to see their efforts swatted away. At the time, Real were locked in talks to sell Casemiro to Manchester United and were unwilling to sanction two sales at once.
However, Liverpool remain keen on the Uruguayan midfielder and believe Real Madrid are open to his sale.
As such, reports in Spain claim their sporting director Julian Ward is readying a fresh January approach for the 24-year-old.
They were willing to go as high as £80.4m (€93m) in the summer, and will have to dig even deeper now.
Those reports state Los Blancos prefer to keep Valverde but are open to his sale if a £87.4m (€100m) bid lands on the table.
They state that Carlo Ancelotti’s side ‘already know’ the Reds are willing to meet that amount. And they state Ward has a new belief that a deal to take Valverde to Anfield can be agreed.
That will cost Liverpool a new club-record fee, surpassing the £85.3m that countryman Darwin Nunez will ultimately cost.
Liverpool set ball rolling with Federico Valverde
And despite that signing, it will not spell the end of Liverpool’s hunt for Jude Bellingham either. He remains on the Reds’ radar ahead of a possible summer 2023 swoop. And any deal for the Borussia Dortmund man will likely see their transfer record broken again. A fee of around £103m is reportedly required.
Liverpool need serious reinforcements in midfield going forwards. James Milner, 37 in January, will likely depart next summer. Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will also leave Anfield on free transfers.
Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara, meanwhile, are both on the wrong side of 30. The duo look increasingly vulnerable to injury lay-offs and cannot be relied on as regulars for much longer.
As such, Ward knows serious surgery on their midfield is necessary with the double deal setting them back a combined £190.4m.
