Liverpool are pushing to sign Matthijs de Ligt amid claims he will be sold by Juventus, Manchester United have the green light to sign a Porto midfielder, while Wednesday’s Euro Paper Talk claims Tottenham fancy a South Korean defender.
DE LIGT WANTED BY KLOPP AS NEXT BIG LIVERPOOL SIGNING
Liverpool are reportedly turning their attention to Matthijs de Ligt as their next blockbuster signing of the summer.
The Reds were keen on De Ligt during his time at Ajax. But they ultimately stepped aside with the defender instead joining Juventus in a £65m deal in summer 2019.
That deal now has just two years left to run – and Juventus are ready to hold talks over an extension.
However, amid their financial difficulties, they are reportedly trying to convince De Ligt to accept a pay decrease.
Indeed, a report last week suggested they are hoping to reduce the Dutchman’s salary from €12m (£10.2m) to €7.5m (£6.3m) per year.
And while that still would mean a £120,000 a week deal, it would represent a significant drop in earnings for the player.
As such, Liverpool are reportedly sniffing out a potential deal for the 22-year-old.
And as per Calciomercato, the Reds are very much in the running to land him due to those issues over his contract.
If Juve fail to tie him to a new deal, they know this summer represents the best chance to maximise his sale price.
And they are reportedly seeking £70m for him this summer – money which would not dissuade Liverpool.
De Ligt arrival seen as long-term Matip replacement
The article claims Liverpool FC want to pair De Ligt with his Netherlands teammate Virgil van Dijk.
That would be particularly harsh on Joel Matip, who had an excellent season for Liverpool in 2021/22.
But at the age of 30 and often prone to injuries, Matip may only have a limited time left at the top.
Liverpool not out of De Ligt race yet
Liverpool aren’t ruling out a move for De Ligt as he could be the long term replacement for Virgil Van Dijk
The Reds also have Ibrahima Konate on their books, with Joe Gomez a fourth option.
However, Liverpool would want to keep both players on their books given the ages of both Matip and Van Dijk.
That could lead to the sale of Nat Phillips, however, amid uncertainty over his future.
