Euro Paper Talk: Julian Ward sets out £60m swap plan to bring Inter star to Liverpool and fix long-term Klopp issue; Man Utd, Chelsea go to war over two Barcelona stars

Nicolo Barella, Milan Skriniar celebrate Inter Milan victory over Bologna in Serie A

Liverpool are readying a cash-plus player swap proposal to tempt Inter Milan into selling Nicolo Barella, Chelsea and Man Utd are battling to sign two Barcelona stars, while Wednesday’s Euro Paper Talk claims Leeds are to sign a veteran Spanish star.

Liverpool are reportedly ready to test Inter Milan’s resolve to keep Nicolo Barella by launching a huge offer for the midfielder.

The Reds are struggling in the midfield department in the wake of an injury to Thiago Alcantara. The hamstring strain he sustained at Fulham will likely rule him out for at least six weeks. But given his previous issues, Liverpool are reluctant to rush him back.

As such, they are being linked with a move for Sporting Lisbon Matheus Nunes, rated at around £45m.

Another option is Inter midfielder Marcelo Brozovic, who has a long-time admirer in Jurgen Klopp. To that end, a report claims they are ready to discuss a potential swap deal with Inter involving one of two Reds stars.

The Croatian star, however, is also 29 and would only be a signing for the medium term at best.

Instead, reports in Italy suggest the alleged interest in Brozovic is a smokescreen for Barella.

The 25-year-old is a player Jurgen Klopp is reportedly ‘bewitched’ by and someone he’s love to have in his ranks.

The Reds boss reprortedly sees Barella as an ideal long-term replacement for Gini Wijnaldum and someone who can add tireless enegry to the midfield. That is something Liverpool surprisingly lacked in during the draw at Fulham.

Signing him, though, will not come cheap, with Inter rating the 39-times capped Italy midfielder in the £75m bracket.

Julian Ward planning Nicolo Barella approach

Liverpool, however, believe a deal is there to be done. Inter are in something of a financial pickle and need to raise funds this summer.

To that end, a number of their players, including Milan Skriniar and Denzel Dumfries are subject of plenty of interest.

Inter boss Simeone Izaghi though has told the club’s board that the two men are crucial to his plans.

And while Barella is equally as important, they are reluctantly to his sale if a sizeable offer is made. And Inzaghi knows that losing one player (in Barella) is better than losing the other two.

As such, Reds sporting director Julian Ward is reportedly considering an approach worth around £60m to sign him. Ward may well include Naby Keita as part of the deal to bring the price down for the Reds.

The Guinean has just a year left on his deal at Anfield and has failed to justify the huge fee Liverpool paid for him.

Inter are also keen on Roberto Firmino, though Klopp is reluctant to let him leave.

But a move to the San Siro for Keita would at least give Inzaghi a like-for-like replacement.

Assessing Liverpool’s prospects of a deal for Barella, trusted transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano admits Liverpool do like him.

Liverpool linked with Inter Milan midfielder Nicolo Barella amid injury crisis in midfield

Fabrizio Romano has explained why a potential deal to bring Barella to Anfield would be difficult to complete.

However, speaking to Caught Offside, he suggests a move in 2023 looks more likely.

“There’s been talk of long-term interest from Liverpool in Inter Milan midfielder Nicolo Barella,” Romano began. “But unfortunately it doesn’t go much further than that, Reds fans.

“So far, there are no proposals or negotiations between Liverpool and Inter Milan. Barella extended his contract with Inter a few months ago and the club sees him as the captain of the future.

“I think it’s a more than difficult deal for this summer so we’ll see what happens in the future. For now Barella is only focused on Inter Milan.”
