A move to Liverpool was “very much of interest” to Konrad Laimer, but the RB Leipzig midfielder will be joining Bayern Munich instead, TEAMtalk has been told.
Laimer has been on Liverpool’s radar as he approaches the end of his contract with RB Leipzig in 2023. The Premier League side need to strengthen their midfield next year, so have identified him as a gettable option.
However, in recent days, there has been a growing realisation that Liverpool might miss out on the Austria international.
Reports have indicated that Laimer is instead close to joining Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich from their domestic rivals.
It will allow the 25-year-old to continue his career in Germany, where he has been playing since his 2017 switch between Red Bull clubs Salzburg and Leipzig.
Despite the forthcoming move to Bayern, TEAMtalk has been told that the idea of joining Liverpool was also appealing to Laimer.
Our transfer insider Graeme Bailey said: “Konrad Laimer is such an interesting player in terms of his future. Bayern Munich came so close to signing him from RB Leipzig in the summer, but they could not agree terms.
“Bayern’s interest then cooled with his countryman and former team-mate Marcel Sabitzer playing well, and the summer signing of Ryan Gravenberch from Ajax – but his move has not worked out at all, and that is one reason we are told that the Munich side returned to Laimer.
Liverpool were working on Konrad Laimer transfer
“Laimer was looked at by Liverpool at the end of the window when they decided late on they wanted another midfielder, but they opted for Arthur loan instead and Laimer also had a knee injury which he has only just recovered from.
“He was a player that Liverpool really liked and he ticked a lot of boxes for them for January, and they had made some contacts but I understand that sources close to the deal have told the Anfield giants that Laimer is indeed heading for Munich.
“Liverpool’s interest was very much of interest to the player but he always had a move to Bayern in his heart, and that will happen with a pre-contract set to be announced in January. Bayern are open to a January deal, but they are prepared to wait until the summer and get him for nothing, if a deal can’t be agreed with Leipzig.”
Either way, Liverpool will have to look at players other than Laimer in their quest to strengthen in midfield.
By the end of the season, James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will all be out of contract. Furthermore, Arthur will likely return to Juventus after his loan spell ends.
The Reds will require reinforcements in an area of their team that has been under scrutiny this season.
