Liverpool will not be making any “panic buys” to compensate for the absences of Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah in January, one reporter has revealed – although there is a major target under consideration.
Salah and Mane still form part of Liverpool’s starting front three. The former in particular is enjoying a stunning season. However, Liverpool continue to be linked with new attackers. There are a couple of reasons behind such stories.
First, Salah, Mane and Roberto Firmino will all be 30 by the start of next season. It will be important for the club to build for the future while still supporting their star players.
More immediately, though, Mane and Salah will be heading off for African Cup of Nations duty in January. The wingers represent Senegal and Egypt respectively at international level.
The 2021 edition of AFCON, which was delayed due to Covid-related reasons, will run from 9th January, 2022 to 6th February. Liverpool could therefore be without two of their main men if either country makes it far in the competition.
Senegal were the runners up of the last edition of the tournament, and Egypt the one before that, so both sides should be in contention for continental glory.
Liverpool will have to find a way to keep their momentum going without the pair, who have scored 16 goals between them in the Premier League so far this season.
Diogo Jota has proven himself as a reliable backup. In fact, he may even be overtaking Firmino in the pecking order. Beyond that, though, options are limited.
Divock Origi remains at the club, but Liverpool would be wise to find another option for depth.
Liverpool the latest club interested in Dusan Vlahovic
Liverpool are the latest club to join the race for Fiorentina forward Dusan Vlahovic, with more updates on the future of Kylian Mbappe after reports suggest he's open to playing under Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, any signing the Reds make will not be driven by panic. Instead, they are looking for the right opportunity.
“Liverpool are looking for wingers because in January they’ll be losing Salah and Mane,” Romano said on his Here We Go Podcast. “No panic buys.
“Only if they have a good opportunity they’ll do it.”
Romano names target Liverpool ‘love’
What’s more, Liverpool may already be looking into one such opportunity. Romano named Villarreal winger Arnaut Danjuma as one player they “love”.
Danjuma has coped admirably with the step up from the Championship to La Liga. He switched Bournemouth for Villarreal in the summer. So far, he has scored seven times from 15 appearances for the Yellow Submarine.
A couple of those goals have come in the Champions League. Therefore, the Dutchman is proving himself at the highest level.
According to Romano, Liverpool remain keen on the 24-year-old. However, it looks like they have a tough task to sign him when they need a winger in the winter.
“I am told Liverpool love Danjuma, but Villarreal have no intentions of opening talks in January,” Romano warned.
Everything he has been doing in La Liga so far will only have convinced them further of his potential. But Villarreal will be standing in their way, perhaps forcing them to look at alternatives if necessary.
