Liverpool transfer news: Fabio Carvalho deal confirmed as key sell-on clause and add-ons revealed

Fabio Carvalho, Derby v Fulham April 2022

Liverpool have confirmed Fabio Carvalho as their first signing of the summer transfer window, the midfielder joining from Fulham.

The Reds had looked to sign the 19-year-old in the January window, but they ran out of time. While the two clubs still did business with Neco Williams moving to Fulham on loan, the Carvalho negotiations dragged on.

Nevertheless, Liverpool agreed a deal shortly after the winter transfer deadline. The deal has therefore been in the pipeline for some time.

Carvalho proved influential in helping Fulham clinch promotion back to the Premier League. He scored 10 goals and assisted eight others. However, he wanted confirmation of the deal to wait until the end of the season.

Liverpool subsequently announced their capture of the teenager on Monday morning after coming close to winning the Premier League on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Liverpool Echo has revealed the finer details of the deal Liverpool struck with Fulham.

The Reds have paid the Cottagers £5million for Carvalho, who has signed a five-year Anfield contract. Despite the midfielder’s contract running out this summer, Fulham were due compensation for his exit.

The deal is similar to the one Liverpool struck with Fulham for Harvey Elliott in the summer of 2019.

Add-ons worth £2.7million also feature in the Carvalho deal and could come into play further down the line.

Thirdly, Fulham negotiated a 20 per cent sell-on clause with Liverpool.

The Liverpool Echo adds that Carvalho has already visited the Reds’ AXA Training Centre. He met manager Jurgen Klopp and his coaching staff, while also undergoing a medical.

Liverpool, Fulham continue transfer business

Carvalho is the fourth player to have moved between Liverpool and Fulham in recent years.

Alongside Williams and Elliott, the Cottagers signed winger Harry Wilson from the Reds last summer.

The Liverpool Echo further reports that the deal for the Welshman eased ‘strained’ relations between the clubs.

Indeed, Wilson has had a fantastic impact at Fulham, helping lead them back to the Premier League alongside Carvalho.

With their new signing, Liverpool now have an exciting blend of youth and experience in their midfield.

While Thiago Alcantara, Jordan Henderson and Fabinho are the senior stars for Klopp, Carvalho has joined Elliott and Jones in offering an exciting look towards the future.

Liverpool could still do with another more experienced signing in midfield soon, with the futures of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita unclear.

Liverpool have delayed the announcement of signing Fabio Carvalho from Fulham until after season

However, Carvalho could yet spring a surprise and settle in instantly into Klopp’s set-up.

His previous signings have adapted in different ways. Luis Diaz has made an instant impact after arriving from Porto in January, while Andy Robertson had to bide his time.

Nevertheless, Carvalho can learn from the more senior midfielders at Liverpool and is an exciting prospect for the Anfield club.
