‘Remember that’ – Fabrizio Romano amps up Liverpool move for Portugal international to kickstart major rebuild; two further deals cited
A Liverpool midfield rebuild could begin with a Portugal international, while Fabrizio Romano specifically named two others who could wind up at Anfield this summer.
The Reds have come crashing back down to earth this season, with just the Community Shield added to their trophy cabinet.
A place in next season’s Champions League is all that’s left for Jurgen Klopp and co. to fight for. 12 games remain, though Liverpool may have a mountain to climb after their next three (Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal).
A sub-par midfield has unquestionably been Liverpool’s biggest problem this term. If the lack of quality wasn’t issue enough, the fact so many are due to depart makes a major rebuild essential.
Indeed, Arthur Melo will return to Juventus once his loan deal concludes. Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will both leave as free agents and could be followed out of Anfield by James Milner.
Klopp is understood to want his vice-captain retained for at least one more year. The Athletic’s David Ornstein revealed Liverpool’s decision-makers are seeing the situation differently.
Jude Bellingham is Liverpool’s primary target and is expected to cost in excess of £100m. However, with so many new faces required, not every player they sign can cost a nine-figure sum.
As such, one option Fabrizio Romano has stressed Liverpool fans should keep in their minds is Matheus Nunes of Wolves.
Second time lucky for Liverpool?
The 24-year-old Portugal international moved to Molineux from Sporting Lisbon last summer in a £38m deal.
Romano stressed Nunes was on Liverpool’s radar at that time, and the Reds’ interest is not going away.
“Liverpool remain keen on Matheus Nunes,” said Romano via his YouTube channel. “He’s a player they appreciate.
“They already discussed Nunes as a target before he moved to Wolves, so it’s something they already discussed before the Premier League move. He remains a player in the list at Liverpool.”
Romano then namechecked Bellingham and Chelsea’s Mason Mount as further potential Liverpool signings.
Mount recently appointed Neil Fewings of the ROOF agency to help explore moves away from Stamford Bridge. That came after talks between Mount’s camp and Chelsea over a new contract reached a stalemate, per the Telegraph.
Mount’s current deal expires at the end of next season and Todd Boehly is dead set against losing highly saleable assets for nothing.
As such, it’s unlikely Mount will be allowed to enter the final year of his deal without being sold – assuming a breakthrough in contract talks isn’t made first, of course.
“We know there is Jude Bellingham, we know there is Mason Mount, many names for Liverpool midfield,” continued Romano.
“I would always include Matheus Nunes because he remains a player appreciated by Liverpool. Remember that.”
