Fabrizio Romano claims unlucky Liverpool signing is ‘leaving’ after one year after major transfer U-turn

Liverpool players Darwin Nunez and Fabio Carvalho

Liverpool will be offloading one of their 2022 signings after a single season, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed.

During the 2022 summer transfer window, Liverpool brought in Darwin Nunez, Calvin Ramsay and Fabio Carvalho on permanent deals, as well as Arthur Melo. None of them have necessarily reached the levels expected of them.

Nunez has shown glimpses of his potential and could yet improve next season, but hasn’t justified his transfer fee yet. Meanwhile, neither Ramsay nor Arthur have played in the Premier League yet due to injury.

But the case of Carvalho has been one of the most intriguing ones to figure out. Liverpool snapped up the attacking midfielder from Fulham and he initially made a bright impression.

Indeed, Carvalho scored in consecutive Premier League games against Bournemouth and Newcastle in August. However, those remain his only two goals in the competition this season, from 12 appearances.

He has had to settle for a fringe role in recent months, only reaching the tally of 20 appearances in all competitions. A further goal came in the EFL Cup against Manchester City in December. But there have been no goal contributions by Carvalho in any competition during 2023.

His last Premier League start came back in October, which perhaps explains why his productivity has decreased. Perhaps he can consider himself unlucky not to be getting more chances in an inconsistent Liverpool side.

Therefore, there has been some confusion about Liverpool’s plans for the 20-year-old – especially when they have looked short of ideas in some of the positions he can cover in.

Earlier this month, it emerged that Liverpool might loan Carvalho out next season, probably to another Premier League club if they can guarantee he will play regularly.

And now, Romano has confirmed that the young talent will be on his way out.

Romano confirms Fabio Carvalho exit – ‘he is never playing’

Speaking on his Here We Go podcast, Romano said: “Fabio Carvalho, I am told, is also leaving.

“We have to see what solution they will find but he is young and he is never playing so it is important to clarify these things.”

Things must have escalated fairly quickly, since Romano said on March 20 that there was no decision at that point about Carvalho’s future. In the time since, Liverpool must have realised it could be in everyone’s best interests to perform a U-turn by sending him elsewhere.

Carvalho signed a contract until 2027 when becoming a Liverpool player last July. It would seem reasonable for them to allow him to leave on loan in order to continue his development.

But he has still shown some potential, suggesting he might be worth keeping on the books for the long term.

As was the case when Carvalho’s original exit links arose, it isn’t yet clear where he might end up as his next destination.
