Fabrizio Romano confirms signing Liverpool will make after bizarre decision to reject dominant star emerges

Tottenham striker Richarlison battling with Eintracht Frankfurt centre-half Evan Ndicka

Liverpool are strongly expected to sign a player who isn’t a midfielder this summer, though Fabrizio Romano revealed they’ve already spurned the chance to sign a dominant star on bargain terms.

Midfield additions will take centre stage at Anfield this summer. Indeed, with the likes of Arthur Melo (loan expiry), Leighton Clarkson (Aberdeen), Naby Keita (Werder Bremen), James Milner (Brighton) and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all leaving, a midfield overhaul is now a necessity and no longer a luxury.

Alexis Mac Allister was the first to arrive when plucked from Brighton for just £35m. Other targets in Liverpool’s sights include Khephren Thuram, Manu Kone, Ryan Gravenberch, Romeo Lavia, Nicolo Barella and Gabri Veiga.

However, according to Fabrizio Romano, an addition may yet come at centre-back, with Liverpool on the hunt for a left-footer specifically.

Liverpool’s frontline options in the position – Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez – are all right-footed.

Van Dijk is the starting left centre-half, though will turn 32 in July. Elsewhere, Joel Matip is poised to enter the final 12 months of his current contract.

A left-sided centre-half is therefore wanted and per Romano, Liverpool will accelerate their chase in the second half of the current window. While not stated, the inference is the all-important midfield revamp will take precedence first.

But despite Liverpool’s want for a new centre-back, Romano revealed the Reds have already rejected the chance to sign a player who wouldn’t have cost a transfer fee.

Evan Ndicka of Eintracht Frankfurt is the star in question, with the 23-year-old’s contract in Germany expiring on June 30.

“In the second part of this market, I think they will look at the centre-backs market, a left-footed centre-back,” said Romano on his Here We Go podcast.

“Evan Ndicka was offered to Liverpool but they decided against it and he’s now joining Roma.

“So there were some possibilities, and I think Liverpool will explore the centre-back market.”

Ndicka bound for Roma

As stated, Ndicka will join Roma once his Frankfurt deal expires on Friday.

Ndicka was a selection in the Bundesliga team of the season in the 2021/22 campaign and has signed a five-ytear deal with Roma.

Jose Mourinho’s side confirmed Ndicka’s arrival via their official website five days ago.

One left-footed centre-back Jurgen Klopp is know to hold great admiration for is RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol.

However, the Croatian has recently struck an agreement on personal terms with Man City who have since lodged a world record bid for a defender.
