Fabrizio Romano gives update on Liverpool deal for Matheus Nunes but claims Klopp still dreaming of another big signing

Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has given an update on Liverpool’s chase for Wolves midfielder Matheus Nunes, but claims Jurgen Klopp still has another signing on his mind.

The Reds are once again being tipped to swoop for Nunes, having tried to land the player prior to their Premier League rivals getting a £38million transfer over the line last summer.

However, the 24-year-old has so far failed to deliver on the promise he showed at Sporting Libson.

Indeed,  in the 14 Premier League games Nunes has played this season, he is yet to score, and he has just one assist.

Man City boss Pep Guardiola previously labelled the Portugal international as “one of the best players in the world today”.

Nunes, however, has not quite taken to the Premier League in a Wolves team that is struggling down at the wrong end of the table.

Those struggles have once again led to Nunes being tipped for a move to Merseyside. And Romano has given an update on the likelihood of that happening, either in January or the summer.

Writing for CaughtOffside, the Italian journalist said: “Liverpool are monitoring Matheus Nunes alongside other candidates for the summer transfer window. He’s always been appreciated, already when he was at Sporting.”

Klopp still dreaming of Bellingham deal

However, despite that interest in Nunes, Romano admits Klopp still has another top signing in his sights.

He added: “The main focus remains Jude Bellingham. Nunes is one of the midfielders they like, but nothing will happen in January for Nunes.”

With Nunes effectively being ruled out of a January switch, Klopp is likely to turn elsewhere for January reinforcements.

The Reds boss knows his midfield has been a major area of weakness so far this season. Indeed, they were completely dominated by Brentford’s engine room in the 3-1 loss in the capital on Monday evening.

With Dortmund playing hardball over Bellingham, there appears to be zero chance of that deal happening this month.

That leaves Klopp looking at the likes of Adrien Rabiot, Youri Tielemans and Borussia Monchengladbach star Kouadio Kone.

The Reds have already added to their attacking ranks with the addition of Cody Gakpo. However, midfield remains a major problem, while defensively they’ve also now been hit by Virgil van Dijk’s hamstring injury.

Klopp’s men are currently sixth in the table but are seven points off the top four.

Indeed, Liverpool will need a much-improved second half of the season if they are to qualify for the Champions League again.

The Reds are next in action on Saturday when they host Wolves, and probably Nunes, in the FA Cup third round.
