Georginio Wijnaldum will not be joining Everton despite rumours that he could sign for Liverpool’s rivals, as the Dutchman has become a new Roma player instead.
Wijnaldum left Liverpool last summer on a free transfer after his contract expired. Despite his importance to Jurgen Klopp’s side, the Dutchman was allowed to leave for Paris Saint-Germain.
However, his spell with PSG did not go to plan. Although he won the Ligue 1 title in the French capital, he only started 18 of their 38 league matches.
Identified by PSG as someone to move on amid a summer revolution, Wijnaldum was quickly linked with a return to the Premier League.
In recent weeks, there was speculation that he could end up back on Merseyside – but this time with Everton. The Toffees have been in the market for more midfielders this summer.
Wijnaldum may have been on their radar in that regard. But in news that would be welcomed by Liverpool fans, he will not be crossing that particular divide. Instead, he has joined Serie A side Roma.
The former Newcastle talent will spend the 2022-23 season on loan in the Italian capital. Roma will have the option to buy him at the end of the season.
He is their latest recruit of a high-profile summer transfer window, which has also seen them add the likes of Nemanja Matic and Paulo Dybala to Jose Mourinho’s squad.
Wijnaldum told Roma’s official website: “It’s a really good feeling to be a Roma player.
“Everyone I have spoken to has given me great feedback about the club and its fans.
“The club made it clear just how much they wanted me in the efforts they made to complete the deal, which always gives a player a lot of confidence and belief. The reception from the supporters, on social media and elsewhere, has also been fantastic.
“I promise to give 100% and help the team compete for all our targets this season.”
New adventure for Georginio Wijnaldum as Everton move on from ex-Liverpool man
Wijnaldum scored for Liverpool against Roma during the 2018 Champions League semi-final second leg. He will be playing in the Europa League with his new club.
Mourinho has been demanding a new midfielder practically ever since he took the Roma job last summer. Now, he finally has a high-calibre reinforcement in the role.
Previous potential suitors Everton, meanwhile, have moved on to other targets like Amadou Onana and Idrissa Gana Gueye.
Onana will be taking a medical on Saturday after Frank Lampard’s side beat West Ham to a deal. Gueye, meanwhile, could return to the club from PSG, following Wijnaldum out of the exit door but to a different destination.
