Mohamed Salah is the most “greedy” player one Liverpool legend claims to have ever seen – but that didn’t stop him urging the club to give him whatever he wants.

Salah recently set out his desires for a long-term Liverpool future. His contract runs out in 2023 and will be costly for the club to renew. However, his current form has seen him classed among the very best players in the world.

Naturally, he is someone that Liverpool would not want to get rid of. He has scored 12 goals and added four assists from 11 appearances so far this season.

The winger has confirmed this week that he would like to spend the rest of his career at Anfield if possible. But he knows the situation isn’t fully in his own hands.

For now, all he can do is keep proving his worth on the pitch. He certainly isn’t struggling with that task and confessed that, although it is a matter of opinion, he wants to be the best player in the world.

Jurgen Klopp already thinks he is and Graeme Souness agrees on current form. However, the pundit – who used to roam Liverpool’s midfield in the late 1970s and early 80s – has confessed to one element of Salah’s game that may split opinion.

“I agree with Jurgen Klopp that Mohamed Salah has been the best player in the world this season,” Souness told The Sunday Times.

“He is perhaps as greedy a player as I have seen. All the top names have an element of that but he is extremely selfish.

“Personal targets are important to him and he shoots from every possible angle, which frustrates his team-mates at times — especially [Sadio] Mane.

“The other players accept it because he is so good. When he doesn’t square it, he is either scoring or making goalkeepers work so that the follow-up is a tap-in for someone anyway, which makes it hard for anyone to criticise him.

“He may even take it as a compliment that I think he is the most selfish player I have seen because he is a goal machine.”

Salah worth whatever he asks

Salah’s goal record stands up among the very best in world football. Across his Liverpool career, he has scored 137 goals in 214 games. He has also provided 51 assists, despite the notion that he can be focused on himself.

Given his record, Salah and his representatives will want to be rewarded appropriately. Any new deal would make him one of the highest-paid players in the Premier League.

Souness believes the 29-year-old is worth whatever he is asking for, because such a deal would benefit all parties.

“I won’t speculate on what he is asking for but Liverpool should give it to him,” he said.

“It is in their interests to pay him as much as they can afford and also for Salah to stay at the club where he has clearly had the best spell of his career.”

Indeed, Salah has played more games for Liverpool than any of his former clubs. What’s more, he has scored more goals for them than all his previous sides combined.

His importance to Liverpool cannot be overstated and it will be important for the club to acknowledge that as soon as possible.
