Liverpool icon can’t hide growing exit desire with ‘preferred destination’ revealed as report catches agent’s attention
Mohamed Salah is said to be giving more consideration to a departure from Liverpool in the summer, according to a report that has caught the attention of his agent.
Salah has become a Liverpool legend in his six seasons with the club since joining from Roma in 2017. This season, he has become the club’s all-time top scorer in the Premier League and in European competitions.
His individual form has justified Liverpool’s decision to back him with a new contract last summer. However, there have been debates about whether it was the right call for the team as a whole.
After all, Liverpool’s form has been inconsistent this season and they risk missing out on Champions League qualification. It has led to uncertainty about several of their players, as well as potential targets.
Some believe it may have been less disruptive to the team to have sold Salah last summer instead of Sadio Mane, who left for Bayern Munich.
Together, Salah and Mane were once part of Liverpool’s iconic front three, playing either side of Roberto Firmino. But they reached a point last year where they could only continue with one of them.
Mane was sacrificed, and this year Firmino will follow him out of the Anfield exit door when his contract expires. Hence, Salah will be the last one standing – but for how long?
There have been some recent claims that Liverpool could sell Salah in the summer to reinvest elsewhere. And according to a report from Foot Mercato, the 30-year-old is “increasingly considering leaving” the club.
Amid Liverpool’s downturn in fortunes this season, Salah is said to be “asking questions about his future”. In fact, he “no longer really hides” that he would entertain a move elsewhere.
The report suggests he wants to mimic Mane by landing at another major European club. In Salah’s case, the “preferred destination” would be in Spain’s La Liga.
Presumably, a player of Salah’s pedigree could only realistically end up at Barcelona or Real Madrid in that league. Whether either of them have an active interest in the Egypt international remains unclear.
Salah agent tackles exit claims
However, perhaps the claims from Foot Mercato should be taken with a pinch of salt anyway. Salah’s sometimes outspoken agent, Ramy Abbas Issa, has responded to a tweet by the author of the report.
The representative replied: “Where did you get this from if not even Mohamed and I discussed this? Please tell us.”
Salah committed to Liverpool until 2025 when signing the most lucrative contract ever awarded to a player by the club last summer.
Therefore, he could yet have another two seasons beyond the present one to endure with Liverpool.
This season, Salah has scored 22 goals from 39 appearances in all competitions. Although the questions about his impact on the system in contrast to Mane’s are understandable, it should be clear that the winger is the least of Liverpool’s concerns on the pitch at present.
Hence, they will hope to keep him happy as they aim to rebuild ahead of next season.
