‘Impossible’ situation sees Liverpool player ‘ready to leave’, with Klopp forced into replacing star who’s ‘done nothing wrong’

Liverpool keeper Caoimhin Kelleher could leave this year

Jurgen Klopp will be forced into replacing a player he’d much rather keep this summer, with a report detailing why the Liverpool star who’s ‘done nothing wrong’ wants out.

The upcoming summer is shaping up to be one of the most important since Jurgen Klopp took charge. A major midfield rebuild is required, with the likes of Jude Bellingham, Mason Mount and Matheus Nunes, to name just three, all linked.

Multiple additions are required given the sheer weight of players who’ll depart. From the midfield alone, Naby Keita, Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain and Arthur Melo will all leave. James Milner could raise the tally to four if Klopp’s calls for a 12-month extension aren’t heeded by the club.

However, according to the Daily Mail, Klopp will soon need to sign a new goalkeeper too.

The newspaper report second-choice stopper, Caoimhin Kelleher, is ‘ready to leave’.

The Ireland international has made just 20 senior first-team appearances for the Reds. However, that small number is not a true reflection of his ability.

Indeed, Kelleher has been something of a cup hero for Liverpool and has excelled in penalty shoot-outs especially.

He’s provided stelar back-up to Alisson Becker in the rare instances the Brazilian has been ruled out through injury in the league. Indeed, the Liverpool Echo state Kelleher has ‘done nothing wrong’ throughout his entire nine-year tenure at Anfield.

However, now aged 24, Kelleher seemingly believes the time is now to forge his own path and become a regular starter. Unfortunately for Kelleher, that’s labelled an ‘impossible’ task at Liverpool given the presence of Alisson.

As such, he’s ‘ready to leave’ in a move that will force Liverpool into signing a new number two. Exacerbating the headache further is the fact current third-choice stopper, Adrian, is out of contract at season’s end.

Profile of new Liverpool keeper revealed

The Echo state a goalkeeper at the younger end of his career is likely to be targeted. In effect, the Reds are looking for a like-for-like replacement for Kelleher.

The Mail’s claims back up those from Football Insider in March. FI reported Kelleher has reluctantly been ‘put up for sale’ with it now clear he wants regular first-team football moving forward.

No transfer valuation was cited by either outlet, though it stands to reason Liverpool will hope to generate a sizeable sum for a player who has always been dependable.

The Reds recouped £12.5m when selling Danny Ward – also 24 at the time – to Leicester in 2018. Kelleher is a far superior goalkeeper to the Welshman and logic would dictate they’ll want at least double that amount five years on.

The Mail concluded Kelleher ‘won’t be short of takers’ in the market this summer.
