Ismael Bennacer: Jurgen Klopp tipped to take decisive action with Liverpool pursuit of Milan star underway
Reports in Italy claim Liverpool are set to launch a bid for AC Milan star Ismael Bennacer as Jurgen Klopp looks to bolster his midfield ranks.
The Reds have already brought in three new faces this summer, with Darwin Nunez costing them £67.5m. Fabio Carvalho and Calvin Ramsay have also arrived but it seems as though the German tactician is not done yet. It is thought he is concerned about his midfield strength after Thiago Alcantara went down in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Fulham.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Curtis Jones are currently crocked and the boss wants reinforcements. That is according to Italian outlet Calciomercatoweb, who state that the 24-year-old has a €50m release clause in his San Siro contract.
The Algeria international has been with Milan for three seasons, racking up 105 appearances in all competitions. Primarily a defensive midfielder, he can also play an attacking role and possesses an excellent range of passing.
And, seven years younger than Thiago, he would be a player for now and the future. He has experience in Europe having played in both the Europa League and Champions League for the Rossoneri.
Costing just €16m, Milan have certainly got their money’s worth from the playmaker. And it seems as though the Merseysiders have taken note.
Capped 40 times by Algeria, the former France Under-19 star looks a ready-made replacement for Thiago if Klopp does decide to go down that route.
Bennacer an alternative to Bellingham
Liverpool are not the only club said to be keen on the French-born ace. Both Manchester United and Arsenal have been credited with an interest during the current transfer window.
And Manchester City were linked back in March 2021. But he has remained with his present employers and the Anfield giants may have to work hard to lure him to the north west.
Having claimed a Serie A winner’s medal last term, he is clearly happy at the club. Whether or not the report of Liverpool’s interest turns out to be true only time will tell.
Previous reports suggested Klopp would keep his powder dry this summer. It was said he would wait until the end of the current campaign before sourcing a new schemer.
And the name of Jude Bellingham has never been that far away from the club when it comes to recruitment options. Klopp is known to be a big fan of Borussia Dortmund’s England star and reports claim he will make a move next year.
However, the Thiago situation may force his hand and prompt an assault on Milan for Bennacer. Rumours last month suggested the Reds’ transfer business was over but that might not be the case.
The former Borussia Dortmund chief rarely makes mistakes when it comes to signings. And it would be no surprise to see the club back him again.
