Liverpool’s disappointing 2-1 defeat to Leeds at Anfield has seen Jamie Carragher take umbrage with two stars in particular – with Jesse Marsch’s side making one Reds regular look like a ‘ghost’.
The Whites emerged from an enthralling contest at Anfield with a morale-boosting three points to lift them up to 16th. Having not won a game since August, Leeds had fallen into the relegation places and seen strong questions asked of Marsch.
However, the American was adamant that results were not reflective of performances when questioned earlier this week. And his prediction that positive results would soon come their way come to the fore in dramatic fashion at Anfield.
Leeds’ winner came in the 89th minute when Crysencio Summerville was allowed space to poke home past Alisson. And while Illan Meslier was the busier of the two keepers, the result was nothing less than Leeds deserved.
Indeed, the Whites were unfortunate not to be going in at half-time with the lead. They had carved Liverpool open on more than one occasion with Brenden Aaronson’s effort cannoning back off the bar.
However, they earned their reward in the closing stages after some good work down the wing from debutant Wilfried Gnonto and a fine finish from Summerville.
The performance from Liverpool, though, has raised more questions on their struggles. To that end, Graeme Souness has destroyed five stars for their efforts and reckons it was a situation Jurgen Klopp saw coming.
Carragher, though, was far from happy at the performance of two players in particular.
And in Andy Robertson, the Scottish star came in criticism of two incidents in the game.
Firstly, after a scuffle with Aaronson, Robertson kicked the ball into the American’s stomach when he was on the ground.
Jamie Carragher calls Robertson stupid
“Robertson shouldn’t have done that, he kicked the ball at the player on the floor,” Carragher said on commentary duty for Sky Sports. “He knows what he’s doing.”
The second moment was “absolutely stupid” according to Carragher. That came with Robertson leaving his foot in on Meslier during the closing stages of the game, allowing the Leeds goalkeeper the opportunity to stay down and waste time.
“It’s absolutely stupid from Andy Robertson. He leaves his foot in which could cause him a problem himself,” Carragher blasted.
“But the goalkeeper’s got to go down and that clock’s ticking away. He’s never going to get there.
“Just that trailing right foot. Just seems to hand his right foot there a little bit longer than maybe he should.
“It’s a daft thing to do because this is what you’re going to get now. Liverpool need the ball back in play as soon as possible. He was never going to get that ball.”
However, Jamie Carragher was also disappointed at the ease in which Leeds were able to play through Liverpool’s midfield.
One man who has become an excellent shield for Liverpool over the years is Fabinho, but the Brazilian was bypassed all-too-easily.
And that led to Carragher calling the former Monaco man a ‘ghost’.
“Fantastic from Leeds, going right through Liverpool’s midfield like they weren’t there,” Carragher said in the first half. “Fabinho was like a ghost, he went past him that easily.”
