Jamie Carragher has reacted to the news Sadio Mane will leave Liverpool this summer to start a new challenge at Bayern Munich.
The forward was the subject of two bids from Bayern recently. But they were rather low, forcing Liverpool to reject them out of hand. However, Bayern struck an agreement with a third offer which could rise to £35.1million.
Mane is clearly worth far more than this but Liverpool didn’t have too much bargaining power, given the fact his contract runs out in 2023.
The Athletic reporter David Ornstein states Mane will take part in a medical next week. And he will likely sign a three-year deal with the reigning Bundesliga champions.
A recent report from the Daily Mirror claims the 30-year-old wanted to become the highest earner at Liverpool. But Reds chiefs were unwilling to sanction this, leading to negotiations breaking down and ultimately the star leaving.
Jurgen Klopp’s attack will be boosted by the arrival of Darwin Nunez from Benfica. He notched 34 goals last season and should help to replace some of Mane’s threat.
Nevertheless, the Senegalese’s exit is a major blow for Liverpool. He has been a vital part of their success under Klopp, registering 120 goals and 48 assists in 269 games for the club.
Carragher has regularly heaped praise on Mane while appearing as a pundit. And the former Liverpool defender has tweeted a response to the attacker leaving.
Jamie Carragher reacts to Sadio Mane transfer
He said: ‘My favourite Liverpool player of this era, Sadio Mane finally departs. Low maintenance, high performance and never injured!
‘Trophies and goals galore, a true Liverpool legend. Thank you Sadio’.
Mane lifted pretty much every club trophy there is to win while at Liverpool. His accolades include the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.
Darwin Nunez a massive Liverpool signing - but big Salah, Mane difference clear
Liverpool have made another impressive signing in Darwin Nunez, but the deal differs to those gone before up front in Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.
But the former Southampton ace will now embark on a new adventure in Germany. He will help Bayern as they attempt to win their 11th Bundesliga title in a row.
Bayern could end up repeating Liverpool’s transfer stance. Klopp’s side were waiting to finalise the Nunez deal before allowing Mane to move on.
And that is what Bayern seem to be doing with Mane and Robert Lewandowski. The latter is pushing for a move to Barcelona this summer.
Meanwhile, there has been an update on Joe Gomez’s new contract, with ‘plenty’ of Premier League clubs eyeing him up.
