Jamie Carragher has given three reasons why Mo Salah deserved a new Liverpool contract and thinks his team-mates will be ‘delighted’ that the forward is staying.

Salah was linked with Real Madrid and Barcelona amid entering the final 12 months of his Liverpool deal. Some officials at Anfield were worried he might run down the terms or push through an exit this summer.

Following months of negotiations, Salah and Liverpool reached an agreement on Friday July 1.

The Egyptian’s new contract runs until June 2025 and is worth at least £350,000 a week, as per The Telegraph. It makes him the best paid player in Liverpool’s history.

Salah can now focus on having another fine season in front of goal. Last term, he bagged 31 times in 51 games across all competitions.

Salah being at his best will be hugely important if Liverpool are to add more trophies to their cabinet under Jurgen Klopp.

Former Reds and England defender Carragher believes the other players in the Liverpool dressing room will be ‘delighted’ about Salah’s new deal as it gives them a better shot at winning silverware.

The pundit also spoke about three integral reasons why the 30-year-old deserves his major pay rise.

Jamie Carragher delivers Mo Salah verdict

“Liverpool, going back to my day, have always been good payers,” Carragher told talkSPORT on YouTube.

“They’ve never been someone who didn’t pay the market value or reward a player who was doing well.

“With myself, they came to me with a contract, it wasn’t a case of waiting for one. They always reward you when they felt you deserve it.

“Virgil van Dijk signed one 12 months ago. He won’t be going short, I can assure you.

“Those two players are two of the best in world football, two of the best four or five in the Premier League.

“We all know in the dressing room there are certain players who do deserve the big bucks.

“They’re normally the strikers, although Van Dijk is different because he’s classed as one of the superstars in the league.

“But when you’ve got a player like Mo Salah, who has scored more goals in the Premier League over the past four or five years than anyone else and is never injured – you can never question his attitude – there won’t be too many problems in the dressing room.

Liverpool stars ‘delighted’ at Salah deal

“They’ll actually be delighted they’ve got Mo Salah in the team because it gives them more opportunities of winning more trophies.”

Carragher is right about Van Dijk and Salah. They are Liverpool’s two best players and therefore deserve to take home the most money. Such big contracts will also warn other clubs away from their signatures.

The pair are both over 30, which is a slight concern for the Anfield club. However, Van Dijk and Salah both keep themselves in immaculate condition. This means they could be like Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, and play at the top level well into their 30s.

Meanwhile, Klopp has given an update on Alisson’s fitness after he picked up a knock a few weeks ago.
