Jamie Carragher offers Liverpool transfer advice as links to Matheus Nunes and Marcelo Brozovic grow

Liverpool have been offered some sage transfer advice from Jamie Carragher amid reports that the Reds are ready to launch a late summer window raid for one of Marcelo Brozovic or Matheus Nunes.
Jurgen Klopp’s side made a stuttering start to what the club hopes will be another successful season. In drawing 2-2 at Fulham, the Reds were way below their best and generally considered fortunate to escape with a point from a punishing game. Indeed, the pundits were quick to take a couple of their players to the cleaners in analysing their performance.
That draw though has come at an even bigger cost with Thiago Alcantara hobbling out the action early in the second half. Unconfirmed reports in Spain suggest that hamstring issue will rule the player out for the next six weeks, missing up to eight games in the process.
And that will come as a significant blow to the Reds with Thiago one of the first names on Jurgen Klopp’s teamsheet. Indeed, he is the latest in a long line of injuries for Liverpool in the centre of midfield. To that end, Curtis Jones, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita are also on the sidelines.
And with Klopp’s options seriously depleted, it is little surprise to see the Reds linked with a late forray into the transfer window.
As such, a report on Monday claimed they were considering a straight swap deal with Inter for Marcelo Brozovic. The Croatian has long had an admirer in Klopp. And it was suggested he could be on the move to Anfield with one of two Reds stars heading the other way.
He’s not the only midfielder linked with Liverpool either. As such, reports on Tuesday suggest an approach for Matheus Nunes could be in the offing.

To that end, the report claims Nunes has rejected a move to another Premier League side in favour of holding out for a move to Anfield.
However, Carragher’s message to Liverpool is not to panic. He is adamant the club can navigate through their current mini crisis. Furthermore, speaking to Sky Sports, he is adamant they should only spend funds if a special player comes on to the market.
“Liverpool’s first-choice midfield – and the one that played at Fulham – is getting towards the 30-age mark,” Carragher wrote. “You think a younger and more energetic player at some stage is needed. They’ve got those players there in reserve but they’re all injured. I would only want Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool to do that if they get the midfielder they want.
“Liverpool’s success in the transfer market has been down to not panicking. It’s not what they’ve done in the past, it’s not what they’re doing now. And it can’t be what they do in the future.
“If there’s no midfielder they want out there, don’t get him. But if they feel there’s one who has that quality and is available, I would like them to do it of course. But don’t panic.”
Carragher added: “That’s the way Liverpool assesses things in the transfer market. If you think about Virgil van Dijk, that deal fell through in the summer and they waited until January.
“They didn’t get another centre-back – and they did need one – but they waited for the guy that they wanted. That proved very successful and that’s what they’ll do in midfield.”
Jude Bellingham the one Liverpool plan to wait for
Liverpool’s failure to strengthen their midfield so far this summer has probably come as a surprise to many. That appeared their No 1 priority as the last season drew to a close.
And they did try and bring a new midfielder in with their interest in Aurelien Tchaouameni well docmented. He ultimately chose to sign for Real Madrid, leaving Liverpool to go back to the drawing board.
However, the one player they could still end up, albeit with a wait, is Jude Bellingham. The midfielder has been strongly linked with the Reds, having starred since a move to Borussia Dortmund.
The Bundesliga side are unwilling to sell him this summer, having already cashed in on Erling Haaland.

But a 2023 deal may well be on the cards. To that end, a recent report claimed talks between Dortmund and Liverpool are progressing with a potential January deal in the offing.
Liverpool have a solid record for January recruits over the years. Indeed, Van Dijk, Luis Diaz and Luis Suarez are among their more successful additions during the winter window.
