New Joe Gomez contract details revealed as Liverpool leave Aston Villa high and dry after transfer U-turn

Joe Gomez looks set to commit to Liverpool for another five years, with the Reds in talks to tie the defender down to a new Anfield contract.
The 25-year-old currently has two years remaining on his existing deal. However, after making only 11 starts last season, Gomez has been heavily linked with a move away from Merseyside – with Aston Villa leading the race for his signature.
Newcastle were also touted for a potential transfer, but their capture of Sven Botman ended that conversation.
Gomez is currently fourth-choice centre-back behind Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joel Matip. However, that’s not putting the former Charlton man off as he looks to extend his stay.
According to Merseyside journalists, including The Times‘ Paul Joyce, Gomez has now ‘told Liverpool that he wants to stay at the club.’
The Daily Mirror’s David Maddock adds that a new deal for the player will “tie him to the club for the next five years at least.”
Signing a contract extension until 2027 would take Gomez beyond his 30th birthday. While he must have also been given assurances that his playing time will increase.
Indeed, Joyce reports that ‘[Jurgen] Klopp will look to hand the defender opportunities over the coming months,’ while Maddock adds that the German ‘believes he [Gomez] still has development ahead of him.’
The one thing that Gomez has over Van Dijk (31 on Friday) and Matip (30) is his age. To that end, the Reds could be future-proofing the central defensive position – especially with Konate only being 23.
Versatile Gomez provides crucial cover
Gomez is once again expected to provide cover centrally and at right-back in the upcoming campaign.
However, he may have less of a role at full-back after the Reds snapped up Calvin Ramsay this summer.
The former Aberdeen standout arrived in a potential £6.5m deal and has been earmarked as Trent Alexander-Arnold’s understudy.
The news will come as a blow to Villa chief Steven Gerrard, who is a big fan of Gomez.
He was keen on using the England defender across his backline. However, Villa have already acted on their slim chances of signing Gomez by snapping up Diego Carlos from Sevilla.
