Joe Gomez brushes off Liverpool exit rumours to sign new long-term contract; two more extensions incoming

Liverpool player Joe Gomez

English defender Joe Gomez has ended speculation about his future by signing a new long-term contract with Liverpool, with two of his Reds team-mates reportedly set to follow.

25-year-old Gomez had become a transfer target for Aston Villa and Fulham in recent months. They were hoping to lure him away from Anfield with the offer of regular game time, something he doesn’t really get under Jurgen Klopp.

But Gomez has put those rumours to bed by agreeing fresh terms which will keep him at Liverpool until summer 2027.

During an interview with club media, the versatile defender said: “It’s obviously a special moment for me and my family. Another one that you dream of as a kid and one I don’t take for granted.

“It is an unbelievable place to be; in my eyes, probably one of the best – if not the best – clubs in the world at the minute. The opportunity to extend my stay here was an easy decision to make, really.

“Obviously I have been here quite a while now. But in the grand scheme of things I still feel young and, like you say, the best years are ahead of me. I have got more to learn and the time to do that.

“I think I have the platform here to do it with the manager and the coaching staff around me and my teammates, to make sure the best years are ahead.”

Gomez featured 21 times in all competitions last season as the Reds won the Carabao Cup and FA Cup. They narrowly lost out on the Premier League title and reached the Champions League final too, only to come up short against Real Madrid.

Joe Gomez seemingly happy with squad role

Gomez is behind Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate in the pecking order at centre-back. He is also behind Trent Alexander-Arnold when it comes to a starting spot at right-back.

But the 11-cap England international appears happy to play a squad role. Plus, he does usually feature in cup competitions, or when one of his team-mates gets injured.

And he isn’t the only Liverpool player set to finalise a new deal. According to Goal, Diogo Jota and Naby Keita will soon follow Gomez’s lead by penning fresh terms.

Jota’s current contract expires in 2025. A renewal will likely be to reward him for his top displays in the last two years.

Keita, meanwhile, has been linked with a switch to Paris Saint-Germain. His terms run out next year, so Klopp’s side are aiming to end PSG’s interest by sorting out an extension.

Elsewhere, a Premier League club has agreed a £17million deal to sign Wales international Neco Williams from Liverpool.
