Liverpool undervaluing ‘quality’ star three Prem rivals have ‘everything to gain’ by signing

Joe Gomez and Takumi Minamino warming up

Joe Gomez could be a bargain at the asking price being touted by Liverpool, according to one pundit who feels he can aim higher than one suitor being linked with the defender.

It has been a difficult season for Gomez at Anfield following his return from a long-term injury. Whereas before his setback he was the main partner for Virgil van Dijk, he is now behind Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate in the battle for that role.

Indeed, Gomez has only started one Premier League match so far this season, and that was at right-back. He may get more chances there while Trent Alexander-Arnold is injured. However, in the long-term, he will want to be playing regular football at centre-back.

That opportunity may only come away from Liverpool now. Several clubs have been waiting to take advantage. One of the most recent to be linked was promotion hopefuls Fulham; the Daily Express claimed Liverpool could send him there if they receive £23m.

But according to pundit Noel Whelan, that figure is “not a lot of money” for someone like Gomez. What’s more, he should be attracting bigger suitors, with three other London clubs namechecked.

“£23million is not a lot of money to pay for quality centre-half like Joe Gomez,” Whelan told Football Insider.

“We’ve seen how dominant he can be for Liverpool. He’s got tough competition right now and he’s been out injured as well, which hasn’t helped.

“But I think when you’re looking at bolstering at the back, he’s somebody that knows the Premier League. He’s British, still young, £23million.

“You’ll have a queue of people that would like his services. Starting from Arsenal, Tottenham, West Ham and all the way through the Premier League.

“To have somebody like him and that invaluable experience, he plays the game the right way. He’s been a football club that plays the right way and has that winning mentality.

“I think there will be a lot of interested parties to try and secure his services for £23million. It’s not a lot of money to pay for a player that you’re going to get four to five of his best years out of.

“There will be certain teams across Europe looking and thinking: ‘£23million? Wow, absolutely. Why not? We’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain’.”

Joe Gomez to make London move?

Joe Gomez has played 135 times for Liverpool since joining the club in 2015. He is one of the few members of the current squad to predate Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool. However, it seems the manager will be outlasting him.

Where Gomez ends up next remains to be seen. But as Whelan alludes to, there will be plenty of interest in his services.

The 11-time England international is still only 24 years old. Therefore, he would be a long-term investment for whoever takes him.

Even if there is little room for him at Liverpool, he may yet get his chance with a club of European pedigree.

The three clubs Whelan suggested all have a need for a centre-back, so could take Gomez back to his city of birth.
