Jurgen Klopp gives his blessing for Jordan Henderson to join up with England

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has given his blessing for Jordan Henderson to join up with Gareth Southgate’s England squad.

The 32-year-old has met up with the 27-man party after Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips withdrew from the squad. Phillips needs to undergo surgery for a shoulder problem and he is a doubt for the World Cup in November and December.

Henderson has been drafted in for the games against Italy and Germany and Klopp gave the green light for the call.

The Daily Mail reports that Klopp “was happy for his captain to go” and get some much needed game time. The Reds boss does not have any concerns about Henderson’s fitness.

The Liverpool captain, who has missed the last three games with a hamstring injury, is fit again. He was expected to be included in the squad to face Chelsea had the fixture not been postponed.

Henderson was desperate to get some minutes after limping off against Newcastle at Anfield last month.

It’s understood that Klopp gave the green light for Henderson to join up with Southgate’s men as long as he came through tests over the weekend.

Henderson then travelled to St George’s Park on Monday evening, after the Queen’s funeral had concluded.

The Mail report: “The plan was for Henderson to join up provided he came through a number of sessions over the weekend without issue and, as that was the case, he reported to St George’s Park late on Monday night – no players travelled to Burton while The Queen’s funeral was in progress.”

The timing has been perfect for Henderson and Klopp. Ordinarily Klopp would have been uneasy at releasing Henderson in light of the midfield injuries at Anfield.

But with Henderson needing games to get back up to speed, Klopp was more than happy to send the former Sunderland man. And Henderson will be hoping to add to his 69 caps having not featured since the win over Switzerland in March.

Southgate said he did not need to see Henderson after leaving him out of the squad in June.

Henderson pushing for World Cup place

“I don’t need to know anymore about him. And he’s played a lot of football this season,” said Southgate in May.

That could have been seen as a signal his time for the Three Lions was coming to and end. But Phillips’ injury has opened the door and England do not have huge cover in central midfield.

Jude Bellingham, James Ward-Prowse and Declan Rice are the only central midfielders, while Mason Mount operates further forward.

England face Italy in Milan on Friday, before taking on Germany at Wembley next Monday.

The Germany fixture is a final game for Southgate’s players before England travel to Qatar for the World Cup,

England kick-off their World Cup campaign against Iran (Nov 21). They they face USA on November 25, before concluding their Group B games against Wales on November 29.

Meanwhile, Liverpool’s Tyler Morton, who is on loan at Blackburn has been called into the England Under-21 squad.
