Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson had some kind words for Mason Mount following his decisive penalty miss in Chelsea’s FA Cup final defeat.
Mount’s Wembley curse continued last Saturday as the midfielder lost his sixth successive Wembley final for club and country. It wasn’t without a fight, however, as, Jurgen Klopp’s men took Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea right to the death.
The game proved yet another fascinating 0-0 after their Carabao Cup final stalemate, with both sides hitting the post.
It was, however, Mount who orchestrated Chelsea’s final blow in Chelsea’s hopes after he missed the crucial penalty in the shootout.
Henderson spoke about his remorse for Mount, insisting “I’m sure he will bounce back”.
“That is always a big thing for me. You’ve got to be respectful to the opponent, especially with players you play with from your national team,” the Liverpool skipper told Sky Sports.
“You know how good they are and that they are good people, especially in penalty shootouts, it’s never nice for people to miss penalties.
“He’s got the world at his feet, and I am sure he will bounce back. When he gets the opportunity again, he’ll step up and put the ball in the back of the net.”
Aside from the penalty miss, Mount had a good game all in all, but it was overshadowed by the ending to the match.
Why Jordan Henderson went over to Mount
After the match, most of Henderson’s team and Klopp himself ran toward either Kostas Tsimikas or Alisson – Liverpool’s heroes – to celebrate.
The Liverpool captain, however, instead consoled a clearly distraught Mount. The 31-year-old has now spoken about why he chose to sit with his fellow England international.
He added: “I knew he’d be feeling really down, and to be honest, he probably didn’t want me going over there thinking back.
“But I just wanted to give him a little bit of support because he’s a top player, a great lad, and he’s still very young.”
This showcases the compassion and understanding Henderson has for the attacking midfielder.
Despite becoming the first Liverpool captain to win six different trophies, he has been on the losing side in the Champions League final, Carabao Cup final and Europa League final for the Reds since Klopp took charge.
Mount delivers heartfelt apology
Mount also had his say on the penalty miss and took to Instagram to deliver the Chelsea fans a heartfelt message.
“Couldn’t be more proud to be a part of this squad and reaching another final,” the midfielder said.
“Absolutely gutted with the way it ended, but these moments will only make us stronger. Can’t thank you Chelsea fans enough for the support, win or lose.”
Four European giants monitoring Mason Mount's contract situation
Four European giants in the form of Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Manchester City and Liverpool are all said to be monitoring Mason Mount’s situation at Chelsea, following reports that the midfielder is unhappy, with more news on Christian Pulisic and Federico Chiesa.
This is now the second consecutive domestic cup final Chelsea have lost to Liverpool following their Carabao Cup final loss in February.
Chelsea have, however, already confirmed a top-four spot for next season but are currently fighting for third place in the Premier League.
Tuchel’s men have two games left of the season and are sitting two points ahead of Tottenham.
The Blues face Leicester and Watford in their remaining games and will be looking to bounce back after a disappointing season overall.
