Journo reveals ‘whispers’ as Liverpool consider move for Chelsea star; Pochettino won’t let him go easy
Liverpool are reportedly interested in Chelsea centre-back Levi Colwill, who impressed for England at the under-21 European Championships.
The 20-year-old played in all but one of the Three Lions’ matches in the competition, which they won without conceding a single goal.
Colwill’s recent form has caught the attention of several top clubs. But, it will be very difficult to lure him away from Chelsea this summer.
The defender spent last season on loan with Brighton. There, he put in some impressive performances, making 17 Premier League appearances.
Roberto de Zerbi has since hailed him as an excellent ball-playing defender, something that has become very important in recent years.
Jurgen Klopp is looking to add another centre-back to his squad this summer. Given the inconsistent performances of Joel Matip and Joe Gomez last term, that is no real surprise, either.
For instance, the Reds have been heavily linked with a move for Torino’s Perr Schuurs. But, it now seems Crystal Palace could be about to sign him.
So, Klopp may well turn to Colwill as an alternative, if Liverpool can convince Chelsea to sell.
Liverpool considering Colwill offer
According to journalist Dean Jones, Liverpool have had their eye on Colwill for a while. But, as mentioned, it will be difficult for them to sign him this summer.
“There have been whispers over this for a little while actually about Liverpool’s interest in Colwill and it wasn’t reported for a while,” Jones told GiveMeSport.
“But as the Euros continued and Colwill continued to impress, it felt like the club were a little happier for that transfer rumour to be circulated more widely.
“I’m not sure that it’s likely and I don’t think Chelsea would be comfortable with Colwill being allowed to move to Liverpool at the age he is.
“I’ve said before, if Colwill was playing somewhere else, I’m pretty sure Chelsea would be in the conversation to try and sign him. So I don’t understand why they would be willing to let him go at this point?”
Chelsea have already rejected a £30m bid from Brighton for Colwill. And, it’s believed that Mauricio Pochettino is keen on the defender.
So, it would most likely take a big bid from Liverpool to convince the manager to part ways with the youngster.
With that in mind, it will be interesting to see if the Reds test Chelsea’s resolve in the next couple of weeks.
