Jude Bellingham: Carragher teases more Liverpool signings after revealing enormous FSG transfer kitty

Jude Bellingham, Borussia Dortmund, November 2022

Jamie Carragher expects Liverpool to set aside “£150-200million” on new midfield talent, amid frequent Jude Bellingham links.

Liverpool’s midfield has been one of the areas that has come into question most this season. Indeed, they are getting overrun, and have suffered because of it.

The Reds have won five of their 13 Premier League games so far, and are currently in eighth place.

Injuries have hindered the midfield area of the pitch. Naby Keita, James Milner and Arthur Melo have all spent time on the treatment table of late.

Thiago Alcantara also missed a good chunk of games early in the season through injury. The fact he has been one of the most utilised midfielders, despite missing five games through injury, shows Liverpool‘s midfield problems.

Indeed, Jurgen Klopp is having to rely on players that might not be fully game ready.

The midfield problems could be worsened come the end of the season. Keita, Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are all out of contract in summer 2023.

Losing all of those players will, of course, mean there is even less depth in the position.

Carragher feels big spend coming

To counteract those problems, the Reds will want to bring in some new talent. There could be a big spend coming in order to do so, thinks former Liverpool defender Carragher.

“I can see Liverpool spending £150-200m just on the midfield,” he said on The Overlap.

“But I think Liverpool would have to spend that type of money on midfield considering the age profile and there’s three players who are actually leaving on free transfers.”

That could well point to Klopp’s side snaring Bellingham. They are one of the sides that seem keen on battling for the transfer of the Borussia Dortmund star.

If they have that sort of money to spend, a large chunk of it might be going on him.

While Liverpool could get a few solid players with that money, they could also snare one of the world’s biggest future stars. Doing so does not seem a bad move, if they can afford it.

Struggles could continue

Carragher also admitted Liverpool might struggle to make any decent additions to the midfield in January.

“I don’t think you could maybe get someone in January – if you could, yes,” he added.

Indeed, any potential selling sides will know about Liverpool’s need to improve their midfield. As such, they could jack up their prices, making the Reds overpay.

They will likely be unwilling to do so, given they have their eyes on Bellingham in the summer. They might just have to make do with what they’ve got for the time being.

Klopp will hope the players he has at his disposal can turn things around, or Liverpool’s season could be a rough one.
