Liverpool are confident of winning the race to sign Jude Bellingham next summer as Manchester City close on a deal to sign Kalvin Phillips from Leeds United.
Bellingham will remain at Borussia Dortmund in this transfer window but will be available in 12 months. A straight scrap between Liverpool and City looked to be on the cards, but the Reds could now be in the box seat. That is all because City will sign Phillips in the coming days.
The Sun report that Jurgen Klopp is now even more confident of landing Bellingham next summer. The Reds boss is keen to bolster his midfield but will have to wait for Bellingham.
Dortmund have already sold Erling Haaland to City this summer. And they are not willing to cash in on another superstar just weeks later. They will be open to a sale in 2023 and Liverpool have him lined up.
Klopp has spent big this summer when signing Darwin Nunez from Benfica for £85million. But he already has one eye on next year and Bellingham will top his list.
The report claims that City could still pose a threat to the deal. However if the Phillips move does go through they are unlikely to go for Bellingham as well.
It was thought City could have the edge as Bellingham could link up with his good friend Haaland. But an offer is unlikely to be forthcoming.
Instead they will spend £45million on Leeds midfielder Phillips. He will then battle it out with Rodri for a place in the City engine room next season.

There could be interest from elsewhere. Manchester United have also been linked with a move for Bellingham. The Red Devils are in desperate need of quality in the middle of the park. But Erik ten Hag is busy focusing on this summer never mind the next one.
Jude Bellingham staying with BVB for now
Despite all the talk, Bellingham is focusing on his immediate future with Dortmund. The 18-year-old has already made 90 appearances for BVB but accepts he still has lots to learn. The former Birmingham star is keen to continue his development in the Bundesliga.
“The only future I think of is the next game for Dortmund,” he recently told Ruhr Nachrichten. “I’m really looking forward to next season. I can’t wait for it to finally start. But yes, I’ll be here next season, and I’ll be ready.”
Bellingham having another season under his belt with Dortmund could also weigh in Liverpool’s favour. They will be getting a more developed and experienced player. They will just be hoping the £80million price-tag doesn’t start to skyrocket.
