Chelsea star Pulisic admired by Klopp, as Liverpool cautiously shortlist six attackers amid Mane fears

Jurgen Klopp speaking with Christian Pulisic

Christian Pulisic is one of three attackers based in England on a six-man Liverpool transfer shortlist, according to a report.

Liverpool are bracing themselves for the potential departure of Sadio Mane this summer. The former Southampton forward reportedly wants to leave for a new challenge. A sale could make sense for Liverpool, given he is entering the final year of his contract.

If Mane leaves, there could be a void for Liverpool to fill. He has been a regular starter throughout Jurgen Klopp’s reign, anywhere across the attack.

According to the Daily Mail, though, there is a chance that Liverpool would not sign a direct replacement for Mane. They already added Luis Diaz in January and are ready to welcome Fabio Carvalho this summer.

That said, Liverpool are keeping their options open. According to the report, six potential targets remain on their radar.

Three of them are based in English football already. One is Christian Pulisic, who has been with Chelsea since 2019.

They signed him from Borussia Dortmund, where Jurgen Klopp was in charge when Pulisic entered their academy as a 16-year-old. The Liverpool boss is an admirer of the American still.

However, the Mail concede that Pulisic’s valuation may be off-putting.

Thomas Tuchel has a dilemma on his hands with Christian Pulisic, does the USA international need to be sold by Chelsea?

Alternatively, it may be easier to acquire either of two players who were relegated this season. Ismaila Sarr and Joao Pedro went down with Watford but could get an escape route back into the top flight.

Even so, Watford want Pedro – who was a Liverpool target ahead of his move from Fluminense – to stay with them. As for Sarr, there could be some concerns about his decision-making.

Therefore, it is not a guarantee that Liverpool will sign any of them, despite the reported interest.

Three players from Europe join Pulisic, Pedro and Sarr on shortlist

Further afield, though, they have three options playing across Europe. Also on their shortlist are Serge Gnabry, Ousmane Dembele and Arnaut Danjuma.

Gnabry is entering the final year of his contract with Bayern Munich (who are coincidentally Mane’s main suitors). The former Arsenal misfit could get a second chance to prove himself back in the Premier League.

Dembele’s contract, with Barcelona, is even closer to its expiry date. He will become a free agent this summer and is being offered around. He could land in the Premier League, although the Mail doubt his wages would fit in with Liverpool’s structure.

Finally, the Reds could explore bringing former Bournemouth forward Danjuma back to English football. He has enjoyed a fine season with Villarreal, playing on the wing or up front like Mane has.

Who would be best deal for Liverpool?

As stated, Mane has played in any of the front three positions for Liverpool. So they could do with someone versatile as a replacement.

If Mohamed Salah stays, though, they are unlikely to need a right winger. What’s more, Luis Diaz seems to have nailed down the left-wing role.

Therefore, they should perhaps be looking at a centre-forward. Mane has played in that territory since Diaz’s January arrival.

Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota can play there too. So it is understandable why Liverpool may not feel the need to replace Mane, due to the depth they already have.

But if they want someone to provide cover across the front, Pedro or Danjuma could be the most adaptable targets. Both have played on the left and down the middle this season.

Yet there could easily be a temptation to sign a big name like Gnabry or even Pulisic if the terms are right.
