Klopp explains why Calvin Ramsay transfer timing sets ‘fantastic’ new Liverpool signing apart

Calvin Ramsay has signed for Liverpool at a “fantastic” time with the chance to get a full pre-season under his belt, Jurgen Klopp has said.

The Reds confirmed their third arrival of the summer on Sunday, following deals for Fabio Carvalho and Darwin Nunez. Nunez is the standout signing amid his initial £64million price tag from Benfica.

However, 19-year-old Carvalho and now Ramsay – who turns 19 at the end of July – are first-team prospects.

Right-back Ramsay has insisted that first-team minutes are not beyond him and that he will push Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Offering his reaction to the signing from Aberdeen, Klopp lauded “exciting” Ramsay as a player with “bags of potential”. The manager added that the teenager’s arrival so early in the summer will make his transition easier.

Klopp told Liverpool’s official club website: “He is only 18 years old at the moment, although turns 19 soon and already has a decent number of first-team appearances for a defender of his age.

“He is athletic, smart, confident, with good technical ability and – always crucial – is eager to learn. So there’s lots to like.

“Experiences of European and U21 international football have been really important for him and his development, too.

Signing so early in the window is fantastic for him as it means he’ll be with us for pre-season. That helps so much, particularly for a younger signing coming to us.”

Klopp excited for Ramsay at Liverpool

Ramsay leaves Aberdeen having made 39 appearances for the Scottish club following his debut in March 2021.

Last term, he formed a crucial part of the first team, making 22 Scottish Premiership appearances. He also featured in the Europa Conference League.

Add in three Scotland Under-21 appearances earned in September and in March this year and it has been a fantastic rise for Ramsay.

Klopp added: “He and we will have patience with each other. I think we have proved ours is the ideal environment to nurture and harness the qualities and talent of a young player.

“So we’re all really looking forward to working with him and seeing him improve and develop.”

Liverpool add another exciting youngster

Ramsay is the latest in a host of young players who could enjoy a fantastic rise at Liverpool.

The recent trend of exciting signings started with Harvey Elliott in the summer of 2019 from Fulham.

After that, Kaide Gordon joined from Derby in February 2021, with Carvalho and Ramsay now joining.

The four players mean Liverpool have a solid set of players developing who could cement first-team roles in the future.

Liverpool still have to keep an eye on more experienced signings, but they have extended their track record of impressive younger arrivals with Ramsay.
