Jurgen Klopp linked with Man Utd flop as Liverpool favourite touted for Barcelona switch

A report claims Liverpool may move for Barcelona forward Memphis Depay in January and are prepared to send Roberto Firmino in the opposite direction.

Firmino, 30, is currently in his eighth season with the Reds after signing from Hoffenheim in June 2015. However, the Brazil international has now entered the last 12 months of his Anfield contract. He will be able to begin negotiations with foreign clubs in January if there is no agreement on an extension in place.

The South American did recently hint that he would like to remain with his present employers. But there has been no word from the club on a new deal.

Former Manchester United winger Depay is in a similar situation with Barca. The Netherlands international inked a two-year deal with the Catalans in the summer of 2021.

He made 20 starts among 28 LaLiga appearances during his first season for the Spanish giants. However, game time has been hard to come by this term, with just 116 minutes of league football from two outings.

The arrival of Robert Lewandowski has seen his chances of selection dwindle and it may be time for the 28-year-old to move on.

He recently stated his intention to remain at Barca and see out his deal. But the opportunity of regular action elsewhere may be tough to resist.

Other clubs have also been linked, with Chelsea said to be keen. But Futbol Total are suggesting Jurgen Klopp is ‘studying’ the idea of a swap deal involving Firmino this winter.

The report adds that there would be no transfer fee involved, with talks set to take place as the next window approaches. However, the ‘idea is only on paper’ at present.

Firmino still vital to Liverpool cause

Liverpool have endured an uncharacteristically poor start to 2022-2023. Just two wins from their first six top-flight games sees the north-west giants down in eighth place in the table.

They are already nine points adrift of table-topping Arsenal, although the Gunners have played a game more. Firmino has started four times from five league outings this term, bagging three goals.

Two of those came in the 9-0 thrashing of Bournemouth and he remains a firm fans favourite. It is open to debate exactly what the Reds faithful would think of losing Firmino and gaining Depay.

The man with 82 Oranje caps failed to hit the heights while at Old Trafford. He rescued his career at Lyon, bagging 76 goals from 178 appearances in all competitions.

But a lack of success and experience in the Premier League means it would be a gamble to bring him to Merseyside. However, Klopp rarely makes a mistake in his transfer dealings and it might be a move to benefit both parties.
