Jurgen Klopp ‘mistake’ explained as damning report namechecks Andy Carroll in Liverpool star’s struggles

Darwin Nunez Liverpool Crystal Palace red card August 2022

A report claims Liverpool are already concerned they might have made a mistake in signing Darwin Nunez, with his ‘cognitive abilities’ not up to scratch.

The Reds paid Benfica in the region of €64 m for the 23-year-old during the summer transfer window. And they will have to fork out a further €20m in add-ons if certain criteria are met. Jurgen Klopp was in need of a replacement for Sadio Mane and Nunez’s record in Portugal suggested he was the man.

The Uruguay international found the net on 48 occasions from 87 outings in all competitions for As Aguias. But he has struggled early on in the new campaign for the Anfield giants, with two goals from five appearances.

One of those has come in the Premier League while the South American has already received a red card. There is still time for Nunez to come good and his record suggests that may happen.

But Spanish newspaper El Pais have a different take on the situation. They report that, according to a source, Liverpool officials already feel the signing was a ‘blunder’.

And they state that the striker’s lack of ‘cognitive abilities’ displayed in both training and games is a real worry. The outlet goes on to say that Nunez undertook exercises during pre-season that measure mental speed.

And it was at that time that Klopp realised his new signing was ‘making too many wrong decisions and that under pressure his controls were a lottery.’ That has led the South American being handed just two league starts to date.

Nunez Carroll comparison a worry for Klopp

Klopp’s recruitment has generally been spot on over the past few years. And it may be that Nunez does go on to make a real impact for the Merseysiders.

He is still young enough to adapt to the pace of the English game and the differing set of skills required to be a success.

However, El Pais believe there is genuine concern that the hitman’s arrival is a ‘glaring blemish’ on Klopp’s transfer record.

They state that Liverpool’s owners were left ‘perplexed’ when the German tactician pushed for Nunez to be signed. That was despite club officials being warned they were ‘taking a huge risk’ by bringing him to Anfield.

Liverpool shocked the footballing world by spending £35m to sign Andy Carroll from Newcastle back in January 2011. He bagged just six top-flight goals from 44 appearances, spending far too much time on the treatment table.

The Spanish report suggests that Nunez is already ‘getting Andy Carroll’s face’. It is clearly too early to suggest Nunez’s career will follow the same patch as Carroll’s.

Klopp has got most calls right since arriving in the north west but only time will tell if El Pais have got this one correct.
