Jurgen Klopp can sign top-class midfielder for Liverpool on one condition as Euro giants rocked by major concern

Jurgen Klopp will be able to sign a high-quality Italian midfielder for Liverpool this summer if the player’s team fails to qualify for next season’s Champions League, according to a report.

It might be coming a season or two too late, but Liverpool will finally complete a midfield overhaul later this year. Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Arthur Melo will all leave Anfield, making room for new stars to arrive.

There is also concern over James Milner’s future. Klopp is eager for the versatile midfielder to remain on board for an extra season, but Liverpool chiefs have yet to actually open contract talks with the player and his camp.

Liverpool’s ideal signing to improve the midfield would be Jude Bellingham. On March 29, TEAMtalk exclusively revealed that Borussia Dortmund are growing in confidence about keeping the Englishman. However, they will sell him if a colossal bid worth £127million or more arrives.

Bellingham cannot transform the Liverpool midfield on his own though, which means one or two new players need to be signed in the position as well.

One potential recruit that has been mentioned is Inter Milan’s Nicolo Barella. Earlier this month, Italian source Inter Live revealed that Klopp is a huge fan of Barella. And Jamie Carragher has even endorsed the Reds moving for him by labelling him ‘one of the best in Europe’.

Football Italia, who cite Gazzetta dello Sport, have provided an update on Barella and Inter’s situation, and it makes for great reading for Liverpool fans.

The report explains how Inter failing to qualify for next season’s Champions League could have disastrous consequences for their first team. Several of their best players will leave, such as Alessandro Bastoni and Lautaro Martinez.

Inter at risk of losing big-name trio, with Liverpool lurking

The Nerazzurri currently sit in fourth spot, although they are only above fifth-placed Roma on goal difference. Inter also have Atalanta and Juventus chasing them.

Importantly for Klopp, Barella joins Bastoni and Martinez on that list of potential exits. The classy midfielder will not be impressed if Inter fail to make the UCL and will therefore push for an exit.

Another factor to consider is Inter’s finances. They are not in the strongest financial position right now and are therefore reliant on UCL money to make signings and agree new contracts. If they only make the Europa League, then they will struggle to convince big players to join – another reason why Barella would want to depart.

Barella has been valued at £70m in the past. As Liverpool will have to spend around £127m on Bellingham, them going after Barella as well depends on how ambitious club chiefs are feeling this summer.

A double move for Barella and Bellingham would be very expensive. But it could help Klopp’s side get back into Premier League title contention.

One important factor that must be noted is that Liverpool are not in the strongest league position themselves right now. Ahead of Tuesday’s clash with Chelsea, they sit in eighth place. They have some serious work to do if they are to get in the top four ahead of Tottenham, Manchester United, Brighton and Brentford.

Barella will not want to swap Inter for Liverpool if the Merseyside outfit are not in the UCL either. This should give Klopp’s men even more motivation to go on a winning run and leapfrog their top-four rivals.

Meanwhile, a sensational report coming out of France claims Klopp has held talks about becoming the manager of a European giant.
