Jurgen Klopp told why Liverpool should dig deep to sign Chelsea star perfect for new-look attack

Dean Saunders feels Liverpool should take advantage of the contract situation and go all out to sign Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount.

Mount, 24, has become a pivotal player for the Blues since making his professional debut back in August 2019. The talented schemer has made 128 Premier League appearances, netting 27 goals and providing 22 assists. He has also played 36 times for England, with five goals to his name.

However, his Stamford Bridge contract expires in the summer of 2024. Talks over a new deal have stalled and the Portsmouth-born ace may be vulnerable to a summer exit.

The west Londoners will not let him go on the cheap and a fee in the region of £50m has been mooted.

It has also been reported that Mount is keen to move to Anfield to play under Jurgen Klopp.

Football Insider recently suggested that the former Derby County loan man is a ‘huge admirer’ of the German tactician.

That would seemingly give the Merseysiders an advantage in the race for his signature should Chelsea decide to sell.

The north-west giants look to be in a rebuilding phase, with the addition of a few top-class players.

And former Reds star Saunders believes Klopp should make landing Mount a priority to form a talented new midfield.

“Mason Mount, Liverpool should sign him – or Man United,” he told talkSPORT. “I think his dad’s doing his contract, they can’t get it sorted, the door’s open.

“Imagine Liverpool had Bellingham and Mount in midfield? Two good players. If you want to be up there competing, you’ve got to put your hand in your pocket.”

Mount urged to join Liverpool

Both Chelsea and Liverpool have struggled to hit the heights in 2022-2023.

Klopp’s men have rallied of late to sit fifth in the table and still have an excellent chance of securing a top-four berth.

Champions League football will not be on the menu for Blues fans next term. The capital outfit are currently tenth and are way off the pace.

Graham Potter has struggled to stamp his mark on the team since arriving. Reports suggest the club’s hierarchy will give him time to sort things out.

Victory over Leeds followed by progression in the Champions League has certainly helped.

But it has been a tough watch for the Chelsea faithful, with a huge outlay of cash on new players.

It will be interesting to see how the two clubs react next season. And Saunders feels Mount would be a perfect fit for the way Klopp is trying to mould his side.

“I think he should go to Liverpool.” he added. “You can slot him in there sort of joining in with the front three, getting on the ball.

“He’s got a good football brain.”

Manchester United have also been linked, with manager Erik ten Hag said to be a fan of Mount.

The Red Devils may have been hammered by Liverpool last weekend but they have enjoyed a resurgence under the Dutchman this season.

Old Trafford is still a huge draw for any footballer, while Newcastle United have also been mentioned in connection with the player.

But if reports are true, Mount has eyes for Liverpool and may become a Red if Chelsea do not offer him what he wants.
