Liverpool keen for closer look at African striker following in Haaland footsteps and available at bargain rate

David Datro Fofana celebrating for Molde

Liverpool are supposedly interested in Ivory Coast attacker David Datro Fofana, for whom a career trajectory similar to that of Erling Haaland is being predicted, according to a report.

Fofana currently plays for Haaland’s former club, Molde. In fact, he has already scored more for them than Manchester City’s summer signing (albeit at a slower rate). To date, the 19-year-old has 22 goals from 63 games to his name in Norway.

Haaland ended up using Molde as a springboard from which to progress his career. Perhaps Fofana could be capable of ending up at a bigger club, too – and potentially even quicker.

According to Fraternite Matin, Liverpool have become admirers of Fofana as they aim to invest in their attack for the future.

They have learned that he would cost somewhere between €5million and €7million if Molde were to sell him. In other words, Liverpool might have to spend somewhere between £4.4million and £6.1million to get their man.

If Fofana really is going to reach Haaland levels – which is a claim that probably has to be taken with a pinch of salt for now – then it would obviously be beneficial to take advantage before his value increases exponentially.

The report from Fraternite Matin predicts that there will be other competition for Fofana’s signature. It is not yet clear where from, though.

Datro Fofana might have steps to take before Liverpool

In all honesty, it might be too soon from Fofana’s perspective for a move to Liverpool. Haaland took several steps before landing among the elite clubs – and it certainly didn’t do him any harm.

Fofana, who will turn 20 in December, will have to choose his next step carefully so he can keep developing. With 15 goals from 27 games to his name in 2022, he has been building up a rhythm that he will not want to lose.

Unlikely to dislodge Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota or Roberto Firmino for Liverpool, Fofana might need to look at an intermediate option for now instead.

His numbers look good, though, and he has been capped by the senior Ivory Coast national team. Therefore, his potential is high, but he ought not to move it off course by making a hasty decision.

Only time will tell how concrete Liverpool’s interest is, anyway. Fofana must keep focusing on Molde for now, since he remains under contract there until December 2024.

As long as he does well there, other clubs should keep taking a look at him for whenever the time is right for a move.

Coincidentally, the Molde striker is not the only Fofana to be linked with Liverpool in recent days
