Key Liverpool star tipped to be fall guy if Klopp persists in £48m Sofyan Amrabat chase

Former Leeds United forward Noel Whelan has claimed Jurgen Klopp could look to replace an ‘underperforming’ Liverpool star as talk continues to grow over a move for Morocco World Cup star Sofyan Amrabat.

Brazil international Fabinho has been criticised for his performance levels this season, although he is not the only one as Jurgen Klopp’s men have struggled in the Premier League.

Fabinho was outstanding as the Reds finished a point behind winners Manchester City in the title race last season, while also winning both domestic cups and reaching the final of the Champions League again.

The 29-year-old is still under contract until 2026, but doubts have been raised recently about his future.

It’s understood Fabinho will remain at the club in January but will then re-assess his situation in the summer.

Football Insider revealed earlier this week that Liverpool are preparing for two new midfield additions to Klopp’s squad. And at least one of the signings could happen in the new year.

With that in mind, Whelan feels that the potential arrival of Fiorentina star Amrabat could end up being bad news for the Brazilian.

Whelan told Football Insider: “Sofyan Amrabat is on the radar now and he could be the next piece of the puzzle, which allows someone to leave Liverpool in the near future.

“But I still think Fabinho is one of the best.

“Yes, he’s not been hitting the heights of what he’s done in the past few seasons. But has anybody? Not really.

“I don’t think Liverpool have got going at all this season.

“Players are playing at 85%, and that triggers a reaction within other players too.

“Look, there’s no doubt Liverpool are in the market to freshen things up in midfield.

“When you’re getting players like Fabinho underperforming, it doesn’t matter how big of a name you are – Jurgen Klopp will be looking at the market.”

If Liverpool do persist with a move for Amrabat they face serious competition from Tottenham for his signature, as reported in Friday’s Transfer Gossip.

The Reds are back in action on December 22 when they take on Manchester City in the Carabao Cup. Their next Premier League fixture is against West Ham on December 27.
