Liverpool greenlight midfielder’s sale, as top source names five stars who could follow Mac Allister into Anfield

Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Manu Kone and Bayern Munich star Ryan Gravenberch

Liverpool will listen to permanent offers for a star who’s just enjoyed his best season ever, while a Reds source has listed five midfielders who could join Alexis Mac Allister at Anfield.

Mac Allister, 24, was officially confirmed as Liverpool’s newest player on Thursday morning. The Argentine World Cup winner will inherit the No 10 shirt last worn by Reds great, Sadio Mane

Overhauling a sub-par midfield is priority number one for Jurgen Klopp this summer. To that end, a raft of exits have already been confirmed.

Liverpool have opted against triggering the £32m option to buy in Arthur Melo’s loan deal from Juventus. Arthur will return to Turin, while James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will all leave as free agents. Milner is expected to take Mac Allister’s place at Brighton.

However, according to the Athletic, the number of midfield departures is set to swell to five.

The publication stated Liverpool ‘will listen to offers’ for 21-year-old Leighton Clarkson. The academy graduate is ‘expected to secure a permanent move’ despite the fact he’s just presided over a superb season.

Indeed, Clarkson was sent on a season-long loan to SPL side Aberdeen last summer and quickly became a mainstay in their engine room.

Clarkson notched six goals and nine assists across all competitions and helped Barry Robson’s side finish best of the rest behind Celtic and Rangers in third. Their reward is a place in the play-off qualification round of the Europa League.

Yet despite a breakthrough year, Clarkson will be allowed to leave Liverpool who fully intend to sign several new midfielders on top of Mac Allister.

Regarding where Clarkson might go, Aberdeen are keen to bring him on board for a second time. However, Football Insider suggest they may be torpedoed by Celtic and Rangers who have both liked what they’ve seen from Clarkson up close and personal this term.

Aside from the Scottish interest, the Athletic concluded Clarkson is attracting admiring glances from several, as yet unnamed Championship sides.

Liverpool chasing five more midfielders

On the subject of who could complete Liverpool’s midfield revamp, the Athletic’s Liverpool expert, James Pearce, listed five names who are all under consideration.

Ryan Gravenberch (Bayern Munich), Khephren Thuram (Nice), Romeo Lavia (Southampton), Manu Kone (Borussia Monchengladbach) and Gabri Veiga (Celta Vigo) are the quintet Liverpool are casting their eye over.

Mason Mount had been linked, though has agreed personal terms with Man Utd who are now readying a formal bid, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Elsewhere, speculation Barcelona’s Franck Kessie could complete a €35m move to either Liverpool or Tottenham has been branded ‘fake news’ by the player’s agent.

Pearce confirmed Kessie ‘doesn’t feature’ on Liverpool’s midfield shortlist.
