Klopp insists Liverpool ‘have to strengthen’ after refusing ‘stubborn’ transfer approach

Jurgen Klopp of Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp has told his latest press conference that Liverpool do need to strengthen their squad – but he “can’t see it” happening during the January transfer window.

Liverpool have made one signing so far during the January transfer window. They worked quickly to wrap up a deal to sign Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven. A bit like when they signed Luis Diaz last year, they brought forward plans for the signing due to competition from rivals.

But alone, Gakpo might not be enough to rescue Liverpool’s season. They are currently ninth in the Premier League after 18 matches. Already, they are 10 points behind the Champions League places.

There are serious concerns about Liverpool’s midfield, which may only be able to be solved by entering the transfer market. They may require something different in defence, too.

However, there has been a growing feeling that Gakpo will end up as their last signing of January 2023. Manager Klopp is not sensing any appropriate opportunities to strengthen his squad.

And the German tactician – speaking in view of Liverpool’s FA Cup replay against Wolves – has reiterated that they cannot find solutions at present.

Yet he denies they are being “stubborn” in their approach to retaining existing players.

He explained: “It must be a language issue. It must be, that you ask this question again and again and again, because I answered it already so often.

“We look outside [to transfers] as well. It’s not about that we’re stubborn and think that’s it, that we’ll go with these boys until 2050 or whatever. That’s not how we see it.

“It’s all about what you can do and these kind of things. Of course then as well, what you want to do. But it’s much more important what you can do and it’s always, each year, the same.

“It should be a little bit kind of a boring game as well from your side in the transfer window.

“Each press conference somebody tells you you have to ask the question, whoever comes from your agency, ask this question. And I cannot change my answers to that.

“So, if the solutions for us would be out there, available and doable and stuff like this, of course we would bring in players to help. But we have an existing squad as well.

Klopp takes responsibility for Liverpool underperforming

“We are underperforming, definitely, I know that. But I cannot sit here all the time and blame everybody else and players and stuff like this. It’s my responsibility that they perform and that’s my first concern, my first job to do.

“Yes, we have limited options and all these kind of things, but we have players with a contract here. They’re just not available. If they would be all in that would be a different situation but they are not.

“And if we bring in all players, we cannot bring them all on the Premier League list. We can’t bring them all in the Champions League list. It’s just not possible.

“Our squad is not too small. Yes, we have to strengthen. But is this the right moment to do it? I can’t see it because of the situation we are in. And I think I know exactly how the situation is.

“And that’s it, pretty much. I cannot change the answer every week because the situation doesn’t change, even when we’ve lost another game since the last press conference. I know that, but that doesn’t change that situation.”
