Klopp responds to how FSG sale of Liverpool might impact January transfers; explains complicated preparation for Southampton clash

Jurgen Klopp remains “very positive” about the upcoming January transfer window, despite Liverpool being put up for sale by their owners.

FSG is willing to listen to offers for Liverpool, which could have huge implications. If the owners sell up, there will be a mix of excitement and concern about the direction in which the club could go.

There might be pros and cons in both the short-term and long-term. One of the most pressing concerns will be how the January transfer window is affected.

Liverpool might need to make some signings in the winter after enduring an inconsistent start to the season in the Premier League. For example, several have called for them to strengthen in midfield.

Hence, plans should still be ongoing, but it remains to be seen how easy it will be for Liverpool to do business while the business itself could change hands.

Manager Klopp has already reiterated his own commitment to Liverpool whatever happens, but has now backed the club to still be able to do what they need in January.

He said at a press conference: “It is not about money, you have to plan. It is definitely going on, it’s clear. I am very positive about the whole thing because either way it will be fine.

“I have a really close relationship with the owners and I always knew what we can do and what we can’t do. When we were discussing, it’s not that I ask something, they say no and I stop asking.

“It is just before we speak to you there are plenty of discussions. Now we have to see what we do. Nothing is decided, what we will do in the winter.

“We really have to see, we have time before then and we follow the market all the time, every day. There is no player in the world who scores a goal and we don’t know it. That’s how it is.

“If somebody makes a save, we know it. That’s the situation, that’s what will go on. It’s clear. All the rest, we are not involved in these things and that is okay. We have to focus on football and that’s what we will do.”

Klopp was speaking ahead of Liverpool’s last game before the World Cup break, which will be against Southampton on Saturday.

It has been a hard game for him to prepare for due to the change in the opposition dugout, where Nathan Jones has come in for Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Klopp has revealed they have been looking at how Southampton were playing under Hasenhuttl, and what Jones was doing with his previous Luton Town team.

The Liverpool boss said: “I actually thought Ralph Hasenhuttl did an exceptional job at Southampton but everything has its time, maybe it was like that.

“If Southampton showed anything then it was attitude for sure. They have a highly motivated team that was going for it.

“With a new manager there might be more pressure but that is not our problem. We always expect a really motivated opponent but we have no real clue – he doesn’t have a lot of time to change a lot of things.

“In our analysis meeting it was half Southampton and half Luton just to see what he does, but because we don’t know we have to focus on ourselves. That is what we do and that is what we’ll try.

“We expect a really good game and a game that you can win, not because the opponent. We have to show up, it is the last game for a long time.”

In terms of team news, Klopp revealed: “Nobody is out who played midweek or the last game. Milly [James Milner] is back training today. Joel [Matip] trained with us, most of the session but the last bit he didn’t do.

“Naby [Keita] and Luis [Diaz] running.”

The game at Anfield will kick off at 3pm on Saturday.
