Jurgen Klopp and Sadio Mane celebrate Liverpool win

Former Liverpool defender Kolo Toure has explained why Jurgen Klopp should avoid re-signing Sadio Mane for Liverpool, despite the Reds missing his ‘big personality’.

Mane broke Liverpool hearts when he opted to join Bayern Munich last summer. As per Sky Sports, the transfer was worth an initial £27.5million but had the potential to be worth £35m through add-ons.

The Anfield hero arrived at Bayern to help them get over the loss of influential striker Robert Lewandowski, who was pushing for a Barcelona move at that point and eventually joined the Spanish giants for £42.5m.

Bayern supporters were expecting big things from Mane after he had netted 120 goals in 269 matches for Liverpool, helping Klopp’s side to win the Champions League, Premier League and an FA Cup, plus several other trophies.

However, Mane’s first season in Germany has not gone to plan. While he has scored 12 goals in all competitions, his form has fluctuated. And he was recently fined a club-record amount by Bayern after allegedly hitting team-mate Leroy Sane in the face.

Sky Sport Germany have reported that Mane wants to stay at Bayern this summer in order to turn his fortunes around next season. But various other sources have hinted that Bayern wish to sell him, setting up the possibility of a Liverpool return.

Klopp, as well as the Liverpool fans, would love this after all the Senegal international did during his first spell on Merseyside. But Toure, who made 71 appearances for the Reds between 2013 and 2016, does not think such a transfer is the right way forward.

Instead, he has told Klopp to focus on the new attacking talent at his disposal, such as Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez.

Kolo Toure discusses Klopp, Mane

“Jurgen is a top manager. He’s been winning in Germany; he’s been winning here. Every club will go through a transition moment,” the former centre-back said in an interview with the Daily Mirror.

“I think losing [Sadio] Mane was big for them… Mane, for me, was special for them because he could score goals and provide goals, but he also had a big personality. He’s a player that when it was tough, he was able to make the difference.

“But I still believe they are looking for the new version [of Liverpool]. Jurgen is looking to refresh his team and look for the players who are going to fit well in the team. But I’m sure he will do that because he’s a guy who’s got great experience; great man-management.

“I had a great time with him, and I believe he will find a way again to bring the team to fight for the title again.”

Toure added: “I think he will stick with them [Gakpo and Nunez]. He needs to give them time to show they are capable to fit to the Liverpool team. As a player, you have to do your best to show you are capable of performing for them. If you don’t, it’s going to be the next one [player].

“Jurgen is a great manager; he’s doing a great job. I think he’s trying to find players who are going to have the chemistry to keep the team fighting for the title.”

Meanwhile, one journalist believes Liverpool’s hunt for Jude Bellingham is incredibly back on as they have come up with a new strategy.
