Klopp wants more of the same after ‘outstanding’ Liverpool destroy Man Utd 7-0 at Anfield in historic win

Jurgen Klopp Aston Villa v Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp has given his reaction after Liverpool thrashed Manchester United 7-0 at Anfield; a record-breaking victory which could reignite the Merseyside giant’s top-four hopes.

It’s fair to say that no one could have foreseen such an emphatic win for the Reds, but it will be a day that the Anfield faithful will remember for a long, long time.

January signing Cody Gakpo opened the scoring at the end of the first half with a fantastic finish into the bottom corner, after a fairly even first 40 minutes.

But from the beginning of the second half, United completely collapsed and Liverpool were simply magic. Darwin Nunez doubled their advantage just two minutes after the restart before Gakpo got his second just seven minutes later.

Mohamed Salah then joined the party with a fantastic finish after the ball deflected off Scott McTominay and into the Egyptian’s path – smashing the ball into the roof of David de Gea’s net.

Darwin Nunez then got his second with a fantastic header, before Mohamed Salah also got his brace in the 83rd minute.

But, the icing on the cake was Roberto Firmino’s goal in the 89th minute. It was announced this week that he will be leaving the club at the end of the seasonso it was fitting for him to score in his final North West derby.

Klopp says this is ‘a show of what we can be’

Klopp was understandably buzzing after the victory. Speaking to Sky Sports, via BBC Sporthe said: “No words. Spectacular football game. Outstanding. We played top football against the team in form.

“The second half the start was pretty good and the end was pretty good. That is football, it can happen.

“It was the push we wanted. It puts us in the right direction. Everyone has to know we are still around. It wasn’t the case for a while but tonight was a proper show of what we can be and what we have to be from now on.”

On Mohamed Salah becoming Liverpool’s record Premier League scorer, he added: “129 goals, that is insane. What an unbelievable number. He is a special player. We appreciate him now but in the future people will look back and be wow, we witnessed something really special.

“It was all top performances today. That is very important for us – 13 games to come? A lot of points to go for. Tonight it was perfect.”

Salah and Henderson react to ‘special’ victory

Mohamed Salah, as mentioned, scored an impressive brace in the special 7-0 win, so he has every right to be proud of his performance.

“It is very special to win a game like that. We need to stay humble and win our games. Hopefully, it will give us a big push,” he said.

As mentioned, the Egyptian magician became Liverpool’s all-time Premier League record goal scorer with his two goals today. On that, Salah added: “It’s very special. I cannot lie. To get it today against Manchester United is unbelievable.”

Jordan Henderson also put in a fantastic performance in the middle of the park and he was also very proud to play a big part in Liverpool’s famous win.

The Red’s captain said: “It’s a fantastic day for everyone. The performance levels, every player was top quality. You could see the energy levels were back.

“We have shown recently we are on the path back. It’s a big win but we need to concentrate on the next game.

“I’m really happy for Mo [Salah]. He dedicates his life to football. He is the first one in and the first one out.”
