Liverpool have been warned they would be making a huge mistake pursuing a deal for Kylian Mbappe amid fresh speculation linking the superstar with a move to Merseyside.

Mbappe, 23, is regarded as one of the world’s top players and has long been sought after by some of Europe’s top clubs. Indeed, after becoming the world’s most expensive teenager in 2018, the was enormous hyperbole surrounding his future earlier this year with his PSG contract nearing its conclusion.

Indeed, both Liverpool and Real Madrid were the two major names earmarked as potential destinations. And while Los Blancos always looked favourites, Mbappe’s constant flirting with Liverpool meant a move to Anfield was never entirely far from the gossip columns.

However, Mbappe causing something of a surprise by inking a new deal with Paris Saint-Germain, tying him to the club until 2025. That reportedly makes World Cup winner the highest paid player in the game on a deal worth around £600,000 a week.

But his relationship with PSG has taken a rapid downturn since that deal was signed. Indeed, RMC SportLe Parisien and Marca have all reported that Mbappe feels “betrayed” by Paris Saint-Germain and is desperate to now leave at the first opportunity.

Furthermore, reports claim he has fallen out with a number of teammates, including Neymar.

Any such deal, however, will not be easy to negotiate. Per reports, they would be seeking a fee of around £350m to consider his sale in January – a figure surely well beyond Liverpool’s financial means.

Despite that, early reports name Liverpool as the ‘only feasible option’ for Mbappe’s signature in 2023.

However, with Real Madrid also back in the mix to sign him, Liverpool are being told to take a backwards seat and let the Spaniard’s move for his signature.

Liverpool advised to avoid Kylian Mbappe

The warning comes from Darren Bent, who feels Mbappe comes with too many problems. Citing Erling Haaland and Gabriel Jesus as two better examples, he has told talkSPORT why a Liverpool move would be a huge mistake.

“Mbappe comes with a lot of baggage… there always seems to be something,” Bent said.

“Look at Haaland who’s a superstar of world football, he comes with no baggage. Gets the deal done, you never hear any stories about him, he seems like the model professional.

“Whenever we talk about Mbappe he’s always upset about something or he’s fallen out with somebody or him and Poch didn’t have a good relationship…

“There’s all this kind of nonsense.

“He was unhappy last year, he wanted to go to Real Madrid on a free. That didn’t happen and now he’s signed his bumper contract and now again he’s not happy.

“I’ve got no doubt Mbappe is a phenomenal player but do you want that coming into your dressing room and upsetting it?”

Bent has strong allegiances to Tottenham, but claims he would not even swap Mbappe for Arsenal striker Jesus.

Bent said: “Right now? No. I like what Jesus is doing. I’m not saying Mbappe isn’t a better player, because he is.

“But Arsenal are currently top of the Premier League table.”

New Premier League side favourites for Mbappe

As per La Parisien, PSG are wholly against selling Mbappe to Real Madrid and would only sanction his sale to the Premier League.

And with Liverpool seemingly out of the equation, reports now suggest Chelsea might be the best placed to secure his signing.

Their chairman Todd Boehly is not adverse to marquee signings and would be one of the few Premier League chairmen capable of funding such a deal.

The new Blues owner tried to sign Cristiano Ronaldo this summer; a bid which ultimately ended in failure.

But having spent in excess of £270m over the summer, he is reportedly now looking into the feasibility of a deal for Mbappe.

But even if the transfer fee was within their reach, they would have to think very carefully about his overral package, including wages.

To that end, even Chelsea might deem Mbappe too expensive. And with the situation at PSG regarded as murky, this looks likely to be a story with many more twists and turns before the January window opens.
