Massive opportunity emerges for Liverpool, as superstar ‘radically’ changes transfer plan

Luka Modric trying to tackle Kylian Mbappe

Kylian Mbappe is no longer fully convinced about a transfer to Real Madrid, which has opened the door for Liverpool, according to reports in Spain.

Mbappe is out of contract with Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the season. If he does not renew his contract, his free transfer could be one of the biggest of all time. Any new contract he signs elsewhere will have huge implications both financially and from a sporting perspective.

It has long been thought that Mbappe will choose Real Madrid as his next destination. Some reports have even gone as far as saying they could put an offer worth £40m per season over a five-year contract on the table.

However, Madrid are not negotiating with Mbappe – even though they are technically free to do so – until after the second leg of their Champions League Round of 16 tie.

PSG won the first leg, thanks to a stoppage-time goal from none other than Mbappe. After the game, he spoke in Spanish but was saying he has not made a decision about his future yet. And reports in Spain are now indicating that his eagerness to join Madrid may be cooling after all.

According to Sport, the situation has “radically changed” after the first leg of the Champions League match. All of a sudden, Mbappe supposedly has doubts about the Real project.

The report claims he is “frustrated” with the way things are going for his prime suitors, who could actually represent a “step back” in his career. He is now waiting further before making any kind of commitment, which has opened the door for two clubs.

The first is his present employers, PSG. One of Europe’s richest clubs, they are ready to propose a new contract offer that, on a financial level, would be “almost irrefutable”.

Liverpool still have chance to convince Kylian Mbappe

Kylian Mbappe is reportedly changing his mind about Real Madrid and could yet join Liverpool from PSG, it is claimed.

The other club keen to take advantage is Liverpool. Long-term admirers of one of the world’s best players, acquiring Mbappe has often seemed like a dream for the Reds.

But Sport believe they could convince the Frenchman not by money, but by their “sports project”. Led by Jurgen Klopp, there is a feeling that Liverpool could compete regularly for the Champions League trophy if they added Mbappe to their already glittering attack.

Sport think such a move could cause a metaphorical “earthquake” if he decides against Madrid after all. And they also believe he would listen to Liverpool.

Mbappe to make Liverpool attack even more deadly?

If Liverpool were to take Mbappe, their forward line would be frightening. They have been looking to evolve it while keeping Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane central to the project.

In that regard, they added the impressive Diogo Jota in 2020 and Luis Diaz in January 2022, from whom the signs so far have been promising.

Their need for further depth will depend what happens with Salah, Firmino and Mane. All are out of contract in 2023, by which time they will be in their 30s.

The priority is to keep Salah, who is one of the best players in the world. Doing so will mean they will have to improve his salary to a significant degree, though.

Mane, meanwhile, would reportedly be open to a move to La Liga before his career ends. That means he could become an Mbappe alternative for Madrid, in theory, or a target for Barcelona.

Reports have indicated Liverpool may reluctantly pick between Salah and Mane and sell one. As things stand, the Senegal international looks the likelier casualty.

Adding Mbappe either in his place or alongside him, though, would be a huge statement of intent from Klopp’s men, if they can afford it. Obviously, there is no transfer fee, but they would be competing with huge offers when it comes to wages.
