Liverpool have been namechecked again by the French press as a possible destination for Kylian Mbappe this summer.

It’s a potential transfer that would set the Premier League alight and one that would eclipse the Erling Haaland to Manchester City deal. City have agreed a deal in principle to sign Haaland for £51m. Whether Liverpool will respond with their own mega deals remains shrouded in secrecy, but Mbappe is a player who Jurgen Klopp admires.

According to L’Equipe, Klopp spent “several hours” trying to convince Mbappe to join the club in 2017. And from that meeting he has a “direct line” to the player.

Back in 2020, Mbappe told the BBC: “What Liverpool do in this moment is amazing.

“They’re like a machine, they’ve found a rhythm and are like we play again, we play again. They’ve lost zero games. When you watch you think everything is easy but that’s not easy.”

Klopp, too, has also spoken warmly about Mbappe, who is out of contract next month.

His value on the open market would be around the £200m mark, but he could move on for free.

Madrid saw two offers of over £150m rejected by PSG in the summer transfer window. They remain hopeful of getting the attacker to commit to a new deal.

In fact it was reported this week that Mbappe had agreed a contract in principle to stay at PSG for another two years.

The 23-year-old’s mother though was quick to pour cold water on that talk: “There is no agreement in principle with Paris Saint-Germain or any other club.”

Now though, L’Equipe suggests Liverpool could revive the interest they had in 2021.

Mbappe makes Madrid visit

“A third club (Liverpool?) would also have entered the dance,” claim the French outlet, via Sport Witness.

With Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino all out of contract in 2023, the report claims Klopp could be looking at world-class replacement.

The Reds are understood to be keen to renew the deals of Mane and Salah. Although Firmino’s future looks far from assured with no suggestions a new deal is in the offing.

However, there have been no breakthrough in talks with Mane and Salah. And Klopp could be in need of an almighty replacement.

Mbappe would certainly be revered at Anfield, but the wages and signing on fee may well be out of Liverpool’s reach.

The France star is also wanted by Madrid and he visited the city on Monday on a day off. He was seen eating lunch in a famous restaurant in the Spanish capital with his PSG team-mate and Madrid-born Achraf Hakimi.
