Liverpool plot astonishing double £80m raid on same Prem club as Klopp ‘keeps close eye’ on Man Utd target

Liverpool are reportedly emerging as favourites to sign a Premier League midfielder this summer in a deal that could set them back £50m – and a second signing from the same team is reportedly a serious option too.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is gearing himself up for what looks a massive summer at Anfield. Liverpool have fallen quite dramatically off their perch this season and will finish the season without a trophy to their name.

They can still salvage the campaign, somewhat, by securing a top-four finish and a return to the Champions League. However, they currently sit sixth and seven points behind Tottenham in fourth, albeit with two games in hand. However, the real danger may actually come from Newcastle, who are seemingly back to their best again.

The blame, if you like, for Liverpool’s collapse can be attributed to several factors. The ineffective pressing from a new-look Liverpool front three, together with the departure of Sadio Mane hitting them hard. The weariness of a side, who went close to an unprecedented quadruple last season; a seven-year itch for Klopp which tends to hamper many of his sides; injuries impacting the side’s results.

Whatever factor chosen – and it is probably a variety of all of them – the one thing that most agree on is the fact Liverpool need a midfield rebuild.

Indeed, Fabinho has been a shadow of his best self this season. Furthermore, both Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are to leave as free agents this summer, with a top source confirming the £88m pair are poised to depart.

As such, Klopp is reportedly seeking at least two signings to strengthen his midfield options this summer.

Liverpool favourites to sign Matheus Nunes

Jude Bellingham is seemingly the club’s No 1 choice. However, any deal for him now looks fraught with issues.

Instead, Liverpool are now scouring the market for better value-for-money options. And it seems they won’t be short of choices with a number of alternatives emerging.

To that end, Monday’s Transfer Gossip claims the Reds will reportedly usurp Arsenal for a £44m Serie A star.

However, their first signing of the summer could be closer to home with a deal for Wolves star Matheus Nunes seemingly gathering pace.

The Brazil-born Portugal international moved to Molineux in a £38m deal from Sporting Lisbon last August. Strongly linked with the Reds at the time, it was Wolves who beat Liverpool to his signature.

That said, their interest has never faded and they have kept a close eye on his development since. However, he has struggled perhaps to have the impact initially expected, with just one assist to his name from 29 appearances in all competitions.

As such, Julen Lopetegui is reportedly open to his possible sale to help him with his Molineux rebuild.

Now according to Football Insider, talks over a move are gathering pace. And after his struggle to adapt to the Premier League, a fee of around £40m – down from the £50m asking price previously reported – will likely be enough for Wolves to sell.

Furthermore, Liverpool hold an added advantage with Nunes represented by the same agency of Darwin Nunez. And it seems Liverpool hold a good relationship with Gestifute, with the two parties eager to do business once again.

The Portuguese firm is headed by Riccardo Silva, but founded by Jorge Mendes back in 1996.

Wolves continue to plan for next season as a Premier League club. However, Saturday’s 4-2 defeat at home to Leeds drags them firmly back into the survival mix. And their demise would lead to a whole host of players, including Nunes, departing Molineux.

Diogo Jota is another Liverpool client on their books.

Liverpool also keeping tabs on Ruben Neves

The Reds could reportedly also make a double raid on Wolves, with Klopp also reportedly ‘keeping a close eye’ on Ruben Neves’ situation.

His deal at Molineux is currently due to expire in summer 2024 and the player has so far resisted offers to extend his stay.

As it stands, Wolves will likely need to consider his sale this summer if he fails to agree an extension. And while the likes of Barcelona and Arsenal are reportedly admirers, it seems neither will follow up that interest.

However, the Daily Mirror suggests Liverpool are now seriously considering a move of their own for Neves.

Proven as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League outside the top six, any deal for the 26-year-old would be seen as something as a low-risk for Klopp.

Wolves, though, still value Neves at around £40m – a price they still hope to achieve despite his contract situation.

Much like Nunes, relegation from the Premier League would also force their hand.

However, the report claims Klopp will likely have to compete with Manchester United for his signature with Erik ten Hag also considering a move.

A double raid on Molineux would set the Reds back a combined £80m – £90m. However, there is a growing acceptance that signing the Portuguese pair, at a price for still some distance less than Bellingham, actually makes more sense for Liverpool.
