Liverpool switch their attention to alternative Premier League targets as Wolves remove Nunes clause
Liverpool are keeping their options open ahead of the summer transfer window as they have their eye on several Premier League stars.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have been heavily linked with a move for Wolves midfielder Matheus Nunes. However, a recent contract clause change will now make him a harder player to sign.
The 24-year-old previously had a clause in his contract where he would be allowed to leave the club for just £44million this summer. However, this clause has now been removed.
Wolves are now free to dictate the value of Nunes and he would likely cost over £50million in the next window. The club signed Nunes for £38million last summer from Sporting Lisbon.
As Liverpool are keen on striking a deal for several midfielders in the summer, a move for Nunes could prove to be too costly with other targets in mind.
The Mirror have reported that Klopp and his team are now considering alternative options, including Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo.
It is worth mentioning that Caicedo himself also won’t come cheap in the summer. Arsenal had a £70million offer rejected in January and he has since signed a new deal with Brighton.
The 21-year-old has been a standout performer under Roberto De Zerbi and he has been linked with several sides.
His off-the-ball work ethic is second to none as he has won an average of three tackles per game in the Premier League. For context, this is more than any Liverpool player has managed this season.
The Brighton midfielder would tick a lot of boxes for Liverpool, but his signature could prove to be too costly in the summer.
Liverpool have plenty of options
Along with Nunes and Caicedo, Klopp also has his eye on several other targets. Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount has been a player of interest of late.
With his contract situation rumbling on at Chelsea, Liverpool could swoop in with an attractive offer for the England international.
Mount has a deal at Chelsea which runs until 2024, but contract talks have stalled between him and the club in recent months.
The 24-year-old hasn’t had his finest season, but he has still shown glimpses of quality. Last season was his most productive campaign as he scored 11 goals and got 10 assists.
Liverpool are keen to reduce the average age of their squad, particularly when it comes to midfield. A move for Mount would make sense in this regard and he would also add a goalscoring dynamic.
As things stand, Liverpool sit eighth in the Premier League and are 10 points off Manchester United in the top four.
A Champions League finish looks unlikely for Liverpool at this stage, which could also hinder their transfer business in the summer.
