Long-term Liverpool target up for sale with £43m offer enough to seal winger signing

Hamari Traore and Jeremy Doku of Rennes

If Liverpool are genuinely still interested in signing Jeremy Doku this summer, they will be able to do so for a fee in the region of £43m, according to a report.

Doku almost joined Liverpool as a teenager and links with the club have been persistent ever since. Instead, he developed with Anderlecht and ended up at Rennes in 2020. But his time with the French club could be about to come to an end.

It was recently reported that Doku still has admirers at Liverpool, despite their plethora of existing options on the wings.

Now, L’Equipe has provided the development that Rennes have actually decided to cash in on Doku if they can this summer – in addition to midfielders Lovro Majer, Flavien Tait and Baptiste Santamaria.

A deal for Doku is there for the taking if a suitor like Liverpool puts a bid of €50m (approximately £43m) on the table. As things stand, it isn’t entirely clear if the Reds intend to do so.

Indeed, the latest report from L’Equipe does not directly identify who Doku’s suitors are. However, it is emphasised that there is a market for him in the Premier League.

By receiving €50m for Doku, Rennes would be able to double their original €25m investment in the Belgium international.

In the season just gone, he scored seven goals from 35 appearances. It was the most prolific campaign of his career so far, but still might not have been enough to convince Rennes to keep him.

Doku’s overall record for the club includes 11 goals from 90 appearances. There are only two years remaining on his contract with Rennes, who – like Liverpool – will be in the Europa League next season.

Liverpool need for Doku unclear

The 21-year-old’s next destination could be the Premier League. In his preferred position on the right-hand side of attack, though, Liverpool already have Mohamed Salah and should still do for the foreseeable future.

Doku can also play on the left flank, but may find even more obstacles there due to the presence of Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota.

Therefore, a move to Liverpool might not be the right idea for Doku at this moment in time. But he might have the potential to reach their level in the long term if he can continue developing.

Where he progresses next season remains to be seen. Perhaps an intermediate step into the Premier League with a mid-table kind of club would be best for him to see if he has the potential to aim for Liverpool further along his career.
