Liverpool, Arsenal waiting on Real Madrid decision as deadline set for attacker’s sale

Marco Asensio celebrates Real Madrid goal with Vinicius Junior

Liverpool and Arsenal are waiting in the wings for Marco Asensio amid claims Real Madrid have set a deadline for his sale.

Asensio has been at the Bernabeu since July 2015, following a £3.5million transfer from Mallorca. Following a season-long loan at Espanyol, he made his way into the Los Blancos first team.

Asensio has gone on to make 226 appearances for Real since then, registering 47 goals and 23 assists.

This season, the right winger has found the net 10 times in 33 games, while also chipping in with one assist.

Despite the Spaniard’s decent record, Carlo Ancelotti’s team could cash in this summer.

Asensio’s contract runs out next year. And with a renewal yet to be announced, Liverpool and Arsenal are aiming to capitalise.

According to recent reports, Liverpool are willing to double his wages in a bid to bring him to England. Arsenal also have favourable terms on offer.

Update on Marco Asensio future

Sport Witness provide an update on the attacker’s situation, while citing Spanish outlet Sport. They claim Real are locked in negotiations with Asensio over a new deal.

However, the Spanish giants will not increase his salary from £7.5m a year. Asensio feels he deserves more than this, leading to a form of impasse.

Real will not bow down to his wishes, while the 26-cap international is unlikely to pen a new deal at the current rate.

As such, Real will decide whether to sell or retain Asensio on June 30. That means Liverpool and Arsenal will have to wait several months before entering transfer talks over the player.

Star eyeing impressive end to season

Asensio may look to impress in the final few months of the season to get a transfer elsewhere. He remains in Ancelotti’s thinking, despite fierce competition for places.

The Italian can also rely on Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo, Isco and Gareth Bale in wide areas. Eden Hazard is out of contention however after another injury setback.

Liverpool are potentially looking at Asensio as a successor to Mo Salah on the right side of attack. However, he is some way off the Egyptian’s goal record.

Arsenal, meanwhile, are aware of interest in academy graduate Bukayo Saka. Asensio could be taken to the Emirates as his replacement.
