Marco Asensio: Report claims Liverpool are ‘main bidders’ for Real Madrid man as price is set

Liverpool are interested in the signing of Real Madrid winger Marco Asensio amid claims in Spain that the European champions are willing to sell him this summer.

The Reds have seriously strengthened their forward line this summer after splashing out a club-record fee on Darwin Nunez. That eventual £85m price tag Liverpool have paid sees the Uruguayan step into their attack as a replacement for Sadio Mane. The Senegalese forward is nearing a move away with a third Bayern Munich offer likely to be accepted.

Despite Mane’s departure, Liverpool still boast ridiculous options in attack. As it stands, Mohamed Salah, Nunez and Luis Diaz will likely form their favoured front three.

They are ably backed up by Diogo Jota, Roberto Firmino and, as it stands, Takumi Minamino.

However, Firmino also has just a year left on his deal, while Minamino is also nearing a departure, with several clubs keen. Cult hero Divock Origi is also another to have departed.

As such, the Reds may yet look to further bolster their attacking options. With the club likely to push hard to win all four trophies again, Jurgen Klopp knows Liverpool will need strength in depth.

As a result, Spanish paper Sport claims Liverpool are the ‘main bidders’ to sign Asensio.

The 26-year-old’s contract expires in summer 2023 and, aware he can negotiate with overseas suitors from January 1, Real want to cash in now.

Price is set for Real Madrid winger

Under the headline ‘Asensio is for sale’, Sport claims Liverpool are one of six teams exploring the possibility of his signing.

They claim they are seeking £51.7m (€60m) for his signature, though may accept a fee nearer £43m (€50m).

The Spanish paper is adamant Real will listen to offers for the player though in their update.

‘Marco Asensio’s future is up in the air. His contract ends in 2023 and Real Madrid have doubts whether to renew it, or wait for offers to transfer him,’ they write.

‘An important group of European clubs from the most powerful Leagues are interested in his signing. In the Premier Arsenal and Liverpool are the main bidders; in the Bundesliga Bayern and Dortmund are also interested; and in Serie A Juventus and Milan are willing to bid and PSG could approach his signing as a grievance for losing (Kylian) Mbappe against their interests.

‘The striker has a release clause of €700million but he could be sold for €50 or €60million.’

Marco Asensio could fit the bill for Liverpool

Asensio has a decent record for Los Blancos and it’s easy to see why he’s a man in demand.

He scored a memorable goal against the Reds in their Champions League quarter-final tie back in April 2021. Indeed, he boasts an overall record of 49 goals and 24 assists in 235 appearances for the club. That averages out at a goal involvement every 3.2 appearances – not a bad record at all for a winger.

However, competition is tough at Real Madrid, despite Asensio earning a glowing reference from Carlo Ancelotti last season.

“Asensio is very important for us”, he said back in Februry, as per Marca.

“He has quality and commitment. He’s a very important player for us and we’ve won tonight via his greatest quality, his shooting.”

Marco Asensio to Liverpool has potential after no contract signed

However, with the likes of Vinicius Jnr, Eden Hazard and Rodrygo also competing for the wide attacking berths, he has not featured as often as he would like.

And with just a year left on his deal, a parting of ways looks the likely outcome as it stands.

As such, Marco Asensio is a player Klopp may well take a look at. That said, the asking price arguably looks too high at this stage.

Liverpool and Real Madrid, meanwhile, will reportedly go head to head over a deal for Jude Bellingham.
